Hello everyone, I would like to know how to install Ikea Metod cabinet handles myself. I recently put together a kitchen and want to attach the handles to the Metod cabinet doors, but the installation doesn’t seem straightforward to me.
Specifically, I’m interested in:
- Which tools I exactly need
- How to measure and drill the holes correctly to align the handles properly
- Any tips for attaching the handles as straight and securely as possible
Maybe someone has experience with this or can provide a step-by-step guide. Thanks in advance!

Regarding your question about tools: typically, a cordless drill is sufficient, possibly with a drill bit of the appropriate diameter for the holes—often around 5mm (0.2 inches). Additionally, a small spirit level can be helpful if no template is available.
Your goal to install the handles as straight and stable as possible is reasonable since crooked handles can significantly affect the overall look.
However, I would critically consider how accurately the template fits—because even small misalignments are difficult to correct later without extra work.
In short: have you checked if the drilling templates are actually included with your doors? Sometimes there are different door types in the Metod system where the handle installation can vary.

What helped me:
- First, prepare and lay out all screws and handles completely
- Mark the drill points using the Ikea template, if available
- Pre-drill with a thinner drill bit to avoid splintering
- Enlarge the holes with the appropriate larger drill bit
- Then loosely attach the handles and check again if the position is correct
- Afterwards, tighten the screws, but not too much to prevent the fastenings from ripping out
I would also recommend, if possible, working with two people—one holds the door or tool steady, which makes many things easier.
If you need more detailed tips, feel free to ask.
