Hello everyone,

I recently purchased the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe and am in the process of customizing it for my bedroom. I’m wondering about the best ways to personalize this wardrobe to either create more storage space, better organize the interior, or even adapt the exterior appearance to fit my needs.

I’m especially interested in options like shelves, additional clothes rails, drawer inserts, or decorative modifications—of course, without compromising the wardrobe’s stability or voiding the warranty.

Has anyone here had personal experience or suggestions on how to effectively and easily customize the Brimnes wardrobe? Any tips on specific IKEA accessories or variants would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello deoja,

Here is a brief overview of possible customizations for the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe based on my experience.

- Interior organization: The Brimnes comes with adjustable shelves by default, which you can move up or down as needed. For additional storage space, I recommend purchasing and installing extra shelves.

- Clothes rails can be added fairly easily if you use the correct mounting points. IKEA offers clothes rails as accessories that usually fit well.

- There are special drawer inserts available, for example for cutlery or smaller items, which can greatly improve organization.

- External modifications: Some people replace the doors or cover them with adhesive film to create a more personalized look.

It is important not to exceed the pre-drilled holes when installing extra elements to maintain stability and avoid voiding the warranty. If you modify these, IKEA will usually void the warranty.

If you are up for some minor woodworking, you could also experiment with door handles or add extra hooks to extend the wardrobe’s functionality.

If you want, I can provide more detailed steps for shelves or clothes rails.

I can only confirm and add to this: If you have the wardrobe combined with drawers, it’s worth getting separate drawer organizers. These help keep things more organized, for example, underwear, socks, or accessories.

I’ve also had good experience with LED strips mounted inside the frame that provide lighting—this makes it easier to find important items, especially in darker rooms.

Even though it requires a bit more effort, you can equip the doors with self-adhesive magnetic strips to attach small notes or photos—this adds a personal touch and functionality.

If you’re interested in applying films or paint, it’s best to practice first on sample pieces to avoid unsightly chipping.

Overall, the Brimnes is quite sturdy, but it’s advisable to make minor modifications using simple IKEA accessories to prevent any issues.

Simply buy additional shelves and attach them to the appropriate holes.

Use closet rods from IKEA, as they usually fit well.

Drawer inserts help with organization; for example, IKEA VARIERA is a good option.

For doors, you can experiment with films or handles, but make sure to maintain stability.

A brief note on the warranty: Some users modify the doors with films or replace handles, which is generally unproblematic.

It is different when drilling holes for additional clothing rods or self-drilled brackets. In such cases, IKEA will usually deny the warranty if damage results from the modification.

My advice: plan your changes in advance and use IKEA accessories or the appropriate original parts whenever possible. This way you maintain convenience and the manufacturer’s warranty.

Finally: If you want more storage space, it can be worthwhile to supplement the inner panels of the cabinet with lightweight wooden strips. However, this requires some skill.
