ᐅ How can soft-close mechanisms be retrofitted to Ikea PAX doors?

oswaldHello everyone, some time ago I bought a Pax wardrobe from Ikea and am very satisfied with the basic structure and the doors. However, the doors lack the soft-close feature, which I find extremely practical and pleasant on other furniture. Now I wonder if and how it is possible to install soft-close damping on already mounted PAX doors.
I have already done some research, but I mostly find advice for completely replacing the doors with soft-close ones or more general tips on how to replace hinges. By the way, my doors are the standard fronts with regular hinged doors, not sliding doors.
Are there special soft-close kits or adapters that can be purchased separately and installed easily? If so, is the installation complicated or would it be better to hire a professional? I am reasonably skilled with DIY, but I do not want to damage any parts.
I look forward to hearing about your experiences, mounting tips, or recommendations for compatible products. Thanks in advance!

Now I’m wondering if and how it is possible to retrofit the soft-close damping on already installed PAX doors. In principle, retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on Ikea PAX doors is definitely possible, but much depends on the exact type of door and the hinges used. Most PAX folding doors come with simple OML hinges that do not have built-in dampers.
- In most cases, you can replace the existing hinges with soft-close hinges, which are available as spare parts from Ikea or third-party suppliers.
- There are also adapter kits that can be added without completely replacing the hinges; however, these are not from Ikea itself but from specialized third-party furniture accessory providers.
- The replacement mainly requires some patience and careful work, as the doors will need fine adjustments after the switch for the soft-close function to work optimally.
It is important to check the exact dimensions of your hinges to find compatible spare parts. If you are handy, this is quite doable. For professionals, the replacement is straightforward, but it can also be done successfully by yourself if you take your time.
If you like, I can prepare a list of suitable products and a step-by-step guide for you.

In most cases, existing hinges can be replaced with soft-close hingesThat is correct. To add: PAX doors typically use so-called clip hinges with a 35 mm (1.38 inch) drilling pattern. For retrofitting soft-close functionality, special damped hinges are required, either original parts from IKEA or comparable quality models from third-party manufacturers.
- When removing the old hinges, it is important to preserve the mounting holes on the cabinet body, as the new hinges use the same positions.
- Usually, no additional drilling or modifications are necessary.
- After installation, the doors should be adjusted via the hinge’s adjustment features; PAX hinges allow very precise alignment to make the soft-close effective.
Regarding installation:
- Remove the door
- Unscrew and remove the old hinges
- Attach the new soft-close hinges
- Rehang the door
- Adjust the door for pressure, alignment, and height
The soft-close function is usually based on gas dampers inside the hinge, which close the door slowly and prevent slamming. This extends the door’s lifespan and provides a better living experience.
Conclusion: For technically skilled users, the replacement is manageable in terms of cost and time and offers clear benefits.

Are there specific soft-close kits or adapters that can be purchased separately and installed easily? In addition to the soft-close hinges already mentioned, I can add the following: Ikea actually offers a retrofit solution called a "soft-close mechanism," which can be installed as a standalone module on certain PAX doors. However, these modules need to be compatible with the specific door type.
- You should note your exact door measurements and type (e.g., model number or year of manufacture)
- Then you can inquire at Ikea or a specialized retailer about the appropriate retrofit kit
- It is also important to ensure compatibility with the existing hinges and the door thickness
If replacing the entire hinge seems too complex or risky, these modules are a good alternative. They are usually attached by simply hooking or clipping them onto the hinge and function as dampers.
Regarding installation: The assembly is simple and does not require extensive tools. Ideally, consult the retrofit kit’s instruction manual to follow all steps correctly.
If you are uncertain when ordering, it is worthwhile to call Ikea, as product range and availability may vary by region. Otherwise, you can always ask here in the forum for tips on the specific installation.
