Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How can IKEA Malm dressers be effectively protected against moisture? I live in a rather humid environment with periods of high humidity, which concerns me because I worry that the dressers might be damaged by moisture – whether through swelling of the material, warping, or even mold growth. I am especially interested in proven methods to best protect the furniture from moisture without compromising its design or functionality. Are there specific sealants, underlays, or perhaps tricks for positioning the furniture? Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would like to add that the Malm chest of drawers, as mentioned before, has a foil surface that is sensitive to water. I would advise against using liquid waterproofing treatments, as they might damage the foil and cause unsightly stains or warping.
A preventive approach is better:
- Do not place the chest of drawers against damp exterior walls,
- monitor the humidity levels with a hygrometer,
- ensure good air circulation,
- and to protect against rising damp, check the floor and, if necessary, use small spacers.
Additionally, direct water splashes, for example from a flowerpot or a drink, should be avoided at all costs. The material is not waterproof.

So such products are generally not recommended? Are there any recommendations for safe products?Exactly, caution is necessary on foil surfaces, as undesirable effects can occur otherwise. However, I have had good experiences with special furniture waxes that can be gently applied and create a light protective layer without damaging the surface. This doesn’t provide complete moisture protection but serves as a useful supplement.
Otherwise, I would focus more on mechanical measures, such as keeping a gap from the floor, avoiding direct placement against walls, and maintaining a dry environment. This will keep you on the safe side.
