Hello everyone, I have a Malm dresser from Ikea, and the top lid squeaks loudly when I open it. The noise primarily comes from the moving parts of the hinges when I open or close the lid slowly. I suspect that some lubricant might help. My question is: which lubricant is best suited to effectively and permanently eliminate the squeaking without damaging the material? Are silicone spray, WD-40, or perhaps something else more appropriate? Also, are there any special application methods I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hey! Silicone spray is often the go-to solution—it lubricates well, usually leaves no residue, and does not harm plastics or paint. WD-40 can help as well, but it’s more of a penetrating oil with light rust protection rather than a true lubricant. Over time, it can attract dirt, which may cause the squeaking to return. Use it sparingly, and everything will run smoothly! 🙂

Hello! It is important to thoroughly clean the hinges from dust and old residues before applying lubrication, for example with a dry cloth or mild alcohol. Then apply the lubricant sparingly and spot-wise to avoid dripping or sticking. If using silicone spray, make sure it does not get on painted surfaces or fabrics. Afterward, slowly open and close the cover several times to ensure even distribution of the lubricant.

WD-40 is not a long-lasting lubricant, but rather a penetrating oil. It is better to use silicone spray or lithium grease for hinges.

Thanks for the quick responses! One more question: Should I completely empty the Malm dresser before lubricating it, or is it enough to just carefully open the lid and treat the hinges? The hinges are located on the inside of the flip-up lid and partially inside the dresser itself.

From a technical standpoint, emptying it is not absolutely necessary, but it does improve safety and makes the task easier. If you need to open or remove the top panel fully, having less weight is better. Make sure no objects obstruct the opening and secure the lid to prevent sudden movement. Clean the hinges thoroughly before lubricating to achieve the best results.
