Hello everyone, I have a Malm dresser from Ikea, and the top lid squeaks loudly when I open it. The noise primarily comes from the moving parts of the hinges when I open or close the lid slowly. I suspect that some lubricant might help. My question is: which lubricant is best suited to effectively and permanently eliminate the squeaking without damaging the material? Are silicone spray, WD-40, or perhaps something else more appropriate? Also, are there any special application methods I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Clean the hinges thoroughly before lubricating, Exactly, and keep in mind, you don't need much – just a little lubricant is enough, otherwise you'll end up with a big mess. Turn it once, and the hinges will work smoothly like new 🙂

WD-40 is only effective in the short term. I can confirm that. For long-lasting lubrication, penetrating grease or lithium grease is more suitable.kautra schrieb:
Silicone can also cause problems with some rubber seals Good point! Ikea furniture often does not have sensitive rubber parts on the hinges. If it does, it’s better to test it first in an inconspicuous spot.
Thank you very much for the many helpful tips! I have now used silicone spray and cleaned the hinges beforehand. After opening and closing several times, the squeaking is almost completely gone. I will continue to monitor it over the next few days and reapply if necessary. Thanks for the support!
