Hello everyone,
I have been having an issue for some time now where the drawers of my IKEA Malm dresser no longer close properly. More specifically, when I push the drawer all the way in, it doesn’t sit flush with the main body and remains slightly ajar. This happens with all three drawers.
I have already checked if something is stuck or if the rails are bent, but I couldn’t find anything unusual. It feels like the drawer slides are not locking in properly or that some adjustment is missing.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? What simple repair options are there to get the drawers to close tightly again? I would appreciate any tips, including advice on spare parts or necessary tools.
Thanks!

Hello Gapufar,
As already mentioned, you should check the alignment of the dresser. The issue often arises because the piece of furniture is not sitting flat on the floor. A simple test is to place the dresser on a level surface and, without the drawers, check if the sides are perfectly parallel to each other.
Sometimes it also helps to slightly loosen the back panel of the Malm to relieve any minor tensions in the frame that might be hindering the closing.
Good luck with the repair!

Sometimes it’s the simple trick of slightly lifting the drawer when pushing it in,That’s a good point, especially for models with rollers instead of glides on the bottom of the drawers. Although it may sound trivial, often this small movement helps to distribute the load and ensure proper closing.
Additionally, I would like to mention that the tracks are often made from plastic and metal. Metal doesn’t bend easily, but plastic can break or deform under excessive stress.
If that happens, a complete replacement of the runners is recommended. In the long run, this saves more time and frustration than endless repair attempts.
It is often said that the rails in Malm drawers can become loose over time. If you have already tried all the recommended tips several times, a complete replacement of the rails might help. IKEA sells them separately, and installation is usually straightforward.
In my case, this definitely restored the closure.

Check the clip mechanism on the sides.Exactly. These clips are not just fasteners; they also play a role in guiding the drawer.
If the clips are not properly engaged, the drawers can become misaligned and won’t close correctly. Here’s a quick tip: when reinserting, listen for a clear clicking sound. Sometimes gently pressing to release and then snapping them back in helps.
For those interested in how it works: the clips ensure that the rail locks in place at the front when sliding in, keeping the drawer secure.
Adjusting these parts usually results in a noticeable improvement with most Malm dressers.
