Hello everyone,
I will be moving soon and plan to take my Ikea PAX wardrobes with me. Since PAX wardrobes are usually quite large and bulky, I am wondering: what is the best way to load Ikea PAX wardrobes during a move to avoid damage and transport issues?
I intend to dismantle the wardrobes first, as moving them whole could be quite difficult, but I have little experience with disassembly and safely packing the parts so far.
Are there any proven methods or tips on how to best pack and organize the components (such as carcasses, doors, rails, feet, etc.) to ensure a smooth unloading and reassembly process?
Are special protective materials recommended? Or is it advisable to label individual parts? Do you have any tips for the actual loading process, for example in the moving truck, to securely fasten the PAX components?
I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

I plan to take the cabinets apart rather than transport them whole, as moving them in one piece might be quite difficult, but so far I have little experience with disassembly and safe storage. That’s a good approach, as transporting PAX wardrobes fully assembled is often very challenging and carries a high risk of damage.
I would also add that the emotional stress of such a move shouldn’t be underestimated—especially with a large amount of furniture. If possible, definitely do the disassembly with two people; many tasks become easier, and the chances of something breaking drop significantly.
For packing, I recommend wrapping each part with protective film, especially doors and mirrors if you have any. Covers or stretch wrap work very well for the carcass parts.
Besides labeling: I write down which screws and individual pieces belong where, ideally putting everything into labeled zip bags. This saves a lot of time during reassembly and prevents frustration.
When loading the vehicle, make sure heavy items are at the bottom and nothing can shift. Ratchet straps are really invaluable here.
Don’t worry, it usually goes better than expected—I’ve transported PAX wardrobes several times myself and learned a lot along the way!

- Protect doors with bubble wrap
- Collect screws in labeled bags
- Protect carcass parts with blankets to prevent scratches
- Load everything flat and in an orderly manner
- Use straps to prevent shifting

1. Preparation: Before dismantling, make a written list of the individual components of the PAX cabinets. This includes carcasses, doors, drawers, legs, rails, and accessories.
2. Dismantling: Take the cabinets apart in the reverse order of assembly. Using the assembly instructions to disassemble is helpful and prevents mistakes. Make sure to store the screws separately by size and function in labeled zip bags.
3. Protection: Carefully cushion doors and fronts (bubble wrap works very well) to prevent scratches or breakage. Wrap carcasses with furniture blankets or sturdy covers to minimize impact damage.
4. Packing & Loading: Store flat whenever possible, placing heavier parts at the bottom. Use tie-down straps and non-slip mats in the transport vehicle. Avoid stacking too high during loading, as PAX cabinet dividers are not always very strong.
5. After Transport: Keep components away from moisture and store them in a dry, secure place until reassembly.
A small tip: Document the dismantling process with photos – this helps to correctly identify everything during reassembly.
This ensures safe transport with reduced damage and confusion!
