Hello everyone, I am currently working on upgrading my Ikea Pax wardrobes and am looking for ways to equip the doors with minimalist handles. I am aiming for a solution that emphasizes the clean, simple style of the doors while remaining practical—so no oversized or decorative handles, but subtle, high-quality options. What choices are available both from Ikea itself and from third-party suppliers? Are there any recommended types of handles or alternative techniques like push-to-open that work well with minimalist design? I would appreciate any experience reports, specific product recommendations, or tips for installation.

For minimalist handles, I recommend flat handle strips or recessed handles made of aluminum or stainless steel. Alternatively, you can use push-to-open fittings, which eliminate the need for handles altogether. It is important that the handle profiles are not too thick or wide in order to maintain the minimalist look.

A structured approach:
- Handle strips made of matte brushed aluminum are very popular for minimalist designs; they have a low profile and appear very understated.
- Alternatively, recessed grip grooves offer an elegant solution that completely avoids additional material and are smoothly integrated into the door.
- Push-to-open mechanisms are especially suitable for doors without visible handles but may not always function perfectly with heavier doors like Pax.
- For example, Ikea offers the "Knäppen" or "Veddinge" series as simple and narrow handles, with "Knäppen" being rather small.
In general, it is important to take precise measurements and check the door types before purchasing, as not all handles fit thicker doors. A combination of handle strips and technical opening aids is often advisable.

Push-to-open works partially with Pax doors but is not always reliable. If you want minimalist handles, a slim metal handle bar takes up little space and looks very clean.

Thanks for the tip. I’m wondering if anyone has practical experience with push-to-open on Pax doors. I’ve always had the impression that these doors are too heavy or thick for this technology. Are there perhaps reinforced versions or installation tricks? I’m also curious about how flush the handle strips have been installed on your units – they are meant to create a really minimalist look.

Here is a well-founded assessment: Push-to-open systems are technically possible for Ikea Pax doors but are often not recommended as the first choice due to the door thickness of about 12-15 mm (0.5-0.6 inches) and the weight. They require relatively strong springs or magnetic mechanisms, which makes the hardware more expensive and maintenance-intensive. On the other hand, pull handles made of anodized aluminum or stainless steel offer a durable solution; they are surface-mounted yet still flat profiles that visually enhance the door without being obtrusive.

During installation, it is important to mount the pull handles as flush as possible and to drill the holes precisely beforehand to achieve a clean result. This is also not trivial with routed handle recesses – precise tools or professional assistance are needed here.

What I also recommend: carefully check the door measurements before purchasing handles and fittings, as some universal handles with a depth of 16 mm (0.6 inches) fit better than very slim variants that might not be stable enough for mounting.
