Hello everyone, I have some IKEA Hemnes furniture that I would like to make more child-friendly with cushions or upholstery solutions. The furniture is made of wood and quite sturdy, but I am concerned that corners and edges could be dangerous for toddlers and that the surfaces might get damaged quickly during rough play.

I am particularly interested in how to make these pieces not only look nicer and feel softer but also be functional – meaning cushions that are non-slip and washable, possibly with removable covers for regular cleaning. Who has experience upgrading Hemnes furniture with child-friendly cushions, and which materials and methods do you recommend?

One idea is thicker foam pads for seating or cushions for the bed. Are there special tapes, Velcro solutions, or clips that hold securely without damaging the furniture?

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

To make IKEA Hemnes furniture child-friendly with cushions, a combination of safety and easy maintenance is essential.

I recommend first adding foam edge protectors designed specifically for child safety to corners and edges. These can often be attached with adhesive strips that can be removed without leaving residue. For seating and beds, foam pads with a thickness of 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) are suitable, as they provide enough comfort without being too slippery.

When choosing the fabric cover, a washable, durable material such as polyurethane-coated fabric or faux leather is helpful. Alternatively, covers with zippers can be made so they are removable and washable. For attachment, hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) can be fixed directly to the furniture surface or to strips on the cushion to ensure a secure hold over time.

It is also important that the cushions are well-sized so they do not create tripping hazards or slip to the sides. Regular checks to ensure a firm fit are advisable to prevent accidents.

The question of how to make IKEA Hemnes furniture with upholstery child-friendly is not straightforward, as wooden surfaces are sturdy but often hard and unforgiving. Here is my detailed approach:

- First, I carefully check which specific furniture parts should be padded (wardrobe, bed, bench, etc.). For seating furniture, high-resilience (HR) foam with a density of about 40–50 kg/m³ (2.5–3.1 lb/ft³) is recommended because it remains durable and retains its shape.

- For the corners: There are special padding profiles made of soft foam that can be attached using double-sided tape. This tape should not leave adhesive residues; therefore, I recommend branded products specifically designed for furniture surfaces.

- Securing the padding is important. Sewing with webbing straps is one option, but this requires securing ringscrews on the back of the furniture, which not everyone prefers. Velcro fasteners are often a better choice, as they can be sewn onto the upholstery and connected to self-adhesive Velcro strips on the furniture surface.

- The covering fabric: For children, an easy-to-clean surface is essential. I usually use polyester fabrics with a fluorocarbon coating (water- and dirt-repellent). Note: The fabric should be breathable enough to prevent mold buildup and must be non-toxic—especially important for toddlers.

- If the padding rests directly on the wooden furniture, adding a non-slip foil or rubber mat on the back can help minimize slipping.

- Finally, since Hemnes furniture is usually lacquered, be sure to test whether the adhesive or Velcro used causes any damage to the finish.

How tall are the children for whom the padding is intended? And are these specific pieces of furniture that will be used intensively during the day?

Thank you for the detailed explanation. The children are two and four years old, so very playful toddlers. The furniture I want to upholster includes a bench under the Hemnes desk and the Hemnes children’s bed with sturdy wooden sides. Both are used throughout the day. It is important to me that the cushions are non-slip and can be quickly removed and washed when needed, as small accidents do happen from time to time.

I also want to protect the furniture from scratches, since I plan to keep it long-term.

I have no experience yet with the foam profiles for the corners that you mentioned. How well do the adhesive foam strips hold up to daily play—do you have any experience with this?

And what are the advantages or disadvantages of fixed foam cushions on the seating areas compared to removable covers?

Regarding the question of how to make Hemnes furniture with upholstery child-friendly, I would like to add that removable cushions are clearly preferable for hygiene reasons.

Fixed cushions can develop mold faster when exposed to moisture because ventilation is limited and cleaning becomes difficult. With removable cushions, the covers can be washed regularly, and the foam inserts can be dried.

For example, with my children, I equipped the bench seat with cushions made of foam core (5 cm (2 inches) thick) and removable cotton/polyester covers that are attached to the furniture frame with Velcro. This holds very well, even with rough play.

For edge protection, I would also use flexible foam profiles or those made from silicone rubber, which are offered by Amazon or specialty retailers – they adhere reliably and are easy to replace.

A tip: Before applying the adhesive strips, be sure to clean the edges and surfaces with alcohol to improve adhesion.

I really appreciate how carefully the materials and safety aspects are considered here. The safety of our children is definitely the most important factor, but it’s also important not to forget that everyday practical needs often require different features: removable and washable covers are a must for me personally, as I know from experience how often young children cause stains.

I also have Hemnes furniture and chose a combination of washable cotton covers and non-slip pads. This way, nothing slips around, and the cushions are easy to clean. I added appropriate edge protectors that can be easily removed. Don’t worry if the adhesive weakens over time – you can often refresh it with special double-sided tape from a hardware store.

It’s also important to involve the children in using the furniture and show them how to handle it properly – even though that can sometimes test your patience.
