Hello everyone, I’m currently considering how to effectively use Ikea Hemnes furniture as a DIY project. My idea is to create something unique from these generally sturdy and well-made pieces, possibly through modifications or combinations. I am especially interested in approaches and specific examples of how to customize HEMNES furniture using simple woodworking techniques or artistic methods. What options are available, particularly for someone with some experience in furniture making but without professional equipment? How can you transform a HEMNES shelf or bed frame into something truly personal and maybe even practical? I look forward to your experiences and tips!
Hello karbe4, your project sounds exciting! The HEMNES series is indeed a great base because the wood is of genuine quality and relatively easy to work with. Many DIY enthusiasts, for example, create custom shelves by painting the furniture, using chalk paint, or applying stencils to add patterns. A popular approach is also to disassemble the furniture and reassemble individual parts into new pieces – such as turning a HEMNES wardrobe into a sideboard. You can also add glass panels to doors or replace drawer handles to completely change the look. It’s important to think about which tools you have and the final result you want beforehand. I’d be happy to describe some ideas in more detail if you like!

But the HEMNES series surprised me, as the wood is quite sturdy and easy to sand and stain. I once glued together a shelf from that series and treated it with stain – it really gave the furniture character. My advice: start small, like with a bedside table, and experiment with colors or small additions like leather handles. You learn by trying things out. What motivates you the most? Creativity, sustainability, or maybe functionality?

How do you handle such a conversion in practice? Are there any construction details to consider when recombining parts? Are there typical weak points to watch out for? This kind of redesign sounds very exciting as a next step, since it allows for truly personalized customization.

I find that interesting. How do you handle such a remodel in practice? Are there any special considerations when reconstructing cabinets by combining different parts? Yes, good question. The HEMNES furniture is typically assembled using dowels, screws, and relatively sturdy carcasses, with connection points usually in clearly defined areas. If you want to reassemble parts, it’s advisable to ensure structurally that the loads—especially for shelves or cabinets—are distributed across stable surfaces. The back panels of these pieces are usually thinner and are not load-bearing components. Therefore, you should arrange the side panels and bottom plates to stand firmly and avoid twisting.
Normally, the carcass parts can be taken apart; however, the holes remain and may need to be filled if some parts are not used. Some experience with wood gluing and filling is helpful. For a solid remodel, you should also get appropriate fasteners—using screws and brackets can improve stability considerably. If you plan to remove or replace doors, check the hinge system carefully—individual mechanisms are often available separately if you want to insert something different.
If you like, I can also provide tips on tools and materials.
