ᐅ How can IKEA Hemnes furniture be properly prepared for repainting during renovations?

MarojonHello everyone,
I am planning to modify and repaint some IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces. I have a question: How can Hemnes furniture be best prepared during modifications to make them as paint-friendly as possible?
In particular, I am interested in which steps are necessary before painting to achieve the best adhesion and a smooth, even finish. What is the best way to treat the furniture surface? Is it enough to just sand it, or should old paint and varnish layers be completely removed?
Additionally, I would like to know which primers are recommended and if there are specific products suitable for the typical MDF or particleboard structure of Hemnes furniture. Tips on sandpaper grit and the individual work steps would also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for all the professional advice! I want to carry out this project cleanly and with lasting quality.

Basically, when working with Hemnes furniture, which is primarily made of painted MDF, careful preparation is important to ensure proper adhesion of the new paint.
Steps:
- Thoroughly clean the furniture, for example with a mild all-purpose cleaner or denatured alcohol, to remove dirt and grease.
- Lightly sand with fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320) to roughen the old paint and create a good surface for adhesion.
- Remove dust with a microfiber cloth or a vacuum cleaner.
- Use a primer suitable for MDF, such as an acrylic polymer primer or a sealing primer that blocks resin components.
- After priming, sand lightly again (grit 320) to smooth out any imperfections.
- Apply the paint in thin layers.
Complete removal of old paint layers is usually not necessary, especially if the surface is intact. Exceptions are cases with visible damage or chipping.

To prepare the Hemnes furniture for repainting, I recommend the following steps:
- First, remove all metal parts to ensure the entire surface is accessible.
- Clean the furniture with a mild detergent to remove grease and dirt. This is crucial for the paint to adhere properly.
- Next, lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper to roughen the sealant layer. This allows for better adhesion.
- When sanding, use a sanding block to avoid sanding too deeply into the MDF edges.
- After sanding, thoroughly remove all dust.
- For priming, I suggest using a high-quality acrylic primer specifically designed for wood and MDF. It provides an even base.
- After applying the primer and allowing it to dry, perform a fine sanding with 320-grit sandpaper.
- The final paint should be water-based, as it produces less odor and offers good coverage.
It also helps to work in a well-ventilated area and allow sufficient drying time. Intermediate sanding steps can improve paint application if needed.
I hope this helps!

Hey, that sounds like a great project! Hemnes furniture often looks fantastic after a fresh coat of paint.
My advice: take your time sanding and work on the surfaces in several passes. A smooth, even finish only comes from careful work.
Very important: use a good primer to ensure the look lasts a long time. If you’re using water-based varnish, it’s a good idea to test how the finish feels and looks in between before completing all the surfaces.
And don’t worry about mistakes – with sandpaper and filler, you can fix almost anything. Make yourself comfortable, maybe with some music in the background, and enjoy painting!

Hemnes surfaces are usually already sealed, so you should only use fine sandpaper and possibly apply several thin coats of paint instead. Primer can even unnecessarily alter the surface and cause issues with later coats.
So, you shouldn’t just follow recommendations blindly, but decide based on the condition of the furniture whether it’s necessary.
