Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of furnishing my guest room with IKEA Hemnes furniture, but I don’t just want to set up the pieces as they are. Instead, I’m interested in modifying some of the furniture to make the room more functional and cozy at the same time. My question is: What practical and useful modification options are there specifically for the Hemnes series to adapt shelves, dressers, or beds ideally for a guest room? For example, I’m thinking of integrated storage, multi-purpose solutions, or visual adjustments that personalize the typical IKEA style. Does anyone have experience with this or know clever DIY tips on how to modify Hemnes furniture so that it offers more than just standard furniture in a guest room? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hello,

for the guest room, you can remove the slat support brackets on the HEMNES bed and slide storage boxes underneath. The dresser can be divided with a few shelves to store smaller items. You can secure the shelf to the wall with brackets, making better use of the wall space.

Hello Hanni,

your question is very well posed, as modifying HEMNES furniture requires different approaches depending on your goals.

First, it would be helpful to specify which pieces of furniture you want to use. Beds, dressers, and shelves from the HEMNES series are made of solid wood panels, which generally provide a sturdy base for modifications.

Practical modification ideas include:
- The HEMNES bed: Remove the standard slatted bed base supports and replace them with adjustable brackets, allowing you to install a pull-out drawer or storage space underneath. Alternatively, the bed frame can be modified to include folding functions to create more space during the day.
- Dressers: You can add additional drawer inserts or dividers inside – here, features like built-in LED light strips or hidden power outlets can also be integrated, which is useful for guests.
- Shelves: Use extra shelves that can be positioned flexibly, or convert them into a partially enclosed cabinet with doors. This increases storage space and protects items from dust.

An important note: Since HEMNES is made from real wood, modifications can be done with standard woodworking tools. However, you should take care with the furniture finish to avoid cracks or splinters. Also, the stability should not be compromised by modifications; it is best to tighten screws and use reinforcement plates.

If you have questions about specific modifications, I’m happy to clarify! What exactly are you planning?

Hey Hanni!

I find this topic really interesting! The HEMNES series is super sturdy, giving you plenty of room to get creative with modifications 😊

What I’ve already done: The HEMNES bookshelf can be easily converted into a small room divider with just a few extra wooden boards – perfect if you want to separate a guest room a bit. And I replaced the dresser’s handles with attractive metal ones, which immediately gives it a cool look!

A tip: An IKEA HEMNES bed can also be fitted with a fold-up slatted bed base – turning the bed into a huge storage space underneath. Super practical if you want to neatly hide bedding and other items!

Don’t worry if you’re not that handy – with some patience, it definitely works out, and the result is really satisfying!

Looking forward to more ideas from all of you!

Exactly, that’s what I did. Just screwed on 2-3 boards, and now the shelf is very stable and separates the space well.
