Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to set up a home office and considering how to use the Ikea Platsa system most efficiently for this purpose. My workspace should provide enough room for a PC, monitor, and some documents, while also including storage for electronic devices, cables, and folders without looking too cluttered.
I am especially interested in how others here use PLATSA modularly to create flexible, functional workspaces that can be expanded if needed. How do you use drawers, doors, or open shelves? Are there clever cable management tips or specific extensions that have proven useful?
It would also be helpful to know if there are any recommended combinations with other Ikea products to achieve a harmonious yet practical setup.
Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

that’s a very thoughtful question. I’ve been using PLATSA for my home office for some time and can share a few tips:
- Work surface: It’s best to choose a large base unit about 120 cm (47 inches) wide. That way you’ll have enough space for your monitor and keyboard.
- Storage: Use a mix of closed cabinets with doors for folders and open shelves for frequently used items.
- Drawers are great for small items like USB sticks, cables, or pens that can easily create clutter.
- Cable management: I recommend cable trays or clips mounted under shelves. Although PLATSA doesn’t have dedicated cable grommets, you can have holes drilled in the desktop or do it yourself to neatly hide cables.
- Expandability: One major advantage of PLATSA is its modular design—if you need more space later, you can simply add more units.
Personally, I like combining PLATSA with the BEKANT desk because it’s height-adjustable, which makes working more ergonomic.
If you’d like, I can also send you a sample setup.

For a truly efficient setup with Ikea PLATSA, it is advisable to plan the system fully to measure. It is especially important to pay attention to the cabinet depth: PLATSA comes in various depths, ideally choose the one that perfectly fits your devices and folders, usually 35–40 cm (14–16 inches).
Also, consider whether you want sliding doors or hinged doors – sliding doors are often more practical in tight spaces.
Another tip: if you want to keep your cables and power supply neat, get separate cable channels and possibly a small power strip with surge protection that you can hide at the back of one of the shelves. Also, make sure to allow ventilation (especially for devices like routers or NAS) – closed compartments are often not great for heat dissipation.
Do you already have the measurements of your workspace? How large is your desk area, and how many devices do you plan to accommodate there? This information helps to optimize the configuration.

My home office is approximately 3.5 x 3 meters (11.5 x 9.8 feet). So far, I was thinking of a desk about 120 cm (47 inches) wide and around 60 cm (24 inches) deep. I will have a desktop PC with two monitors, a docking station for a laptop, and a printer. Additionally, there will be various cables, about 8 binders, and general office supplies.
I also want the possibility to expand the setup later, maybe with open shelves for books or plants. It is important to me that my workspace doesn’t feel cluttered but stays open and tidy.
I’m open to suggestions on how to combine these requirements well with PLATSA.

I recommend:
- PLATSA frame as the base
- Large drawers on the right or left for folders
- Worktop on top, with cable outlets drilled
- Open shelves on the wall for plants / books
This way, you have everything organized and enough surface area.
