Good morning everyone, I recently used the Billy shelving system from IKEA in my living room and find it very flexible. Now I am considering how to use Billy in the bathroom as well. This raises the question: How can I adapt or protect the Billy shelves to withstand the higher humidity and occasional water splashes in the bathroom without damaging the furniture? What practical tips are there for installation, surface treatment, or accessories to make Billy not only functional but also durable in a bathroom environment? I look forward to your creative and proven solutions, including advice on moisture resistance, additional protective measures, and alternative mounting options. Thanks in advance!

Using the Billy shelf in the bathroom is such a great idea! I painted my shelves with waterproof paint, and thanks to a few small rubber feet, the bottom is well protected too. I can definitely recommend it – it makes the bathroom routine much more comfortable! 🙂

Even if it’s damp inside: foam seals between the shelf and the wall prevent water from getting behind the Billy. A less perfect hack, but it works well! 🙂

That’s a great tip, thanks! Do I need to consider the material thickness, or is a simple foam spacer enough? And does the foam hold up well over time in a damp environment?

A water-resistant foam specifically designed for bathrooms or kitchens lasts longer. Standard foam can develop mold over time.

One last question from me: Are there any experiences regarding the use of Billy in the bathroom with heavy use (e.g., towels, cosmetic products) leading to premature material wear, even with protective measures? Or is its durability comparable to other furniture used in bathroom areas?

Billy is not officially designed for wet rooms. Despite protective measures, it may age faster than furniture specifically made for bathrooms. With heavy use, regular inspections and maintenance are recommended.
