Good morning everyone, I recently used the Billy shelving system from IKEA in my living room and find it very flexible. Now I am considering how to use Billy in the bathroom as well. This raises the question: How can I adapt or protect the Billy shelves to withstand the higher humidity and occasional water splashes in the bathroom without damaging the furniture? What practical tips are there for installation, surface treatment, or accessories to make Billy not only functional but also durable in a bathroom environment? I look forward to your creative and proven solutions, including advice on moisture resistance, additional protective measures, and alternative mounting options. Thanks in advance!

You should definitely use waterproof foil or transparent varnishes. It is also advisable not to place the shelf directly against the wall, but to add small feet underneath to prevent the floor from swelling.

Silicone sealants at the edges also work well. I would consider removing the back panel or replacing it with a waterproof board.

Hey, I treated my Billy with special furniture wax and also installed door seals on the inside – helps keep that bathroom vibe under control. 😉 And a tip: put small bathroom plants on it, looks stylish and creates a more comfortable atmosphere!

That sounds interesting. Can you recommend a specific varnish brand, or what exactly should I look for when choosing one? Is it better to treat the entire shelf or only certain areas that tend to get more damp?

I would recommend applying a finish evenly over the entire shelf to avoid any untreated spots. Strong polyurethane coatings usually provide the best protection against moisture.
