You should definitely use waterproof foil or transparent varnishes. It is also advisable not to place the shelf directly against the wall, but to add small feet underneath to prevent the floor from swelling.

Silicone sealants at the edges also work well. I would consider removing the back panel or replacing it with a waterproof board.

I would recommend applying a finish evenly over the entire shelf to avoid any untreated spots. Strong polyurethane coatings usually provide the best protection against moisture.
