Good morning everyone, I recently used the Billy shelving system from IKEA in my living room and find it very flexible. Now I am considering how to use Billy in the bathroom as well. This raises the question: How can I adapt or protect the Billy shelves to withstand the higher humidity and occasional water splashes in the bathroom without damaging the furniture? What practical tips are there for installation, surface treatment, or accessories to make Billy not only functional but also durable in a bathroom environment? I look forward to your creative and proven solutions, including advice on moisture resistance, additional protective measures, and alternative mounting options. Thanks in advance!

A simple solution is to mount Billy directly on the wall using a spacer. This allows better air circulation and reduces the risk of mold.

Silicone seals on the edges also work well

How exactly do I apply these silicone seals? Are there specific products you would recommend for wood or particleboard? And should the seals be replaced every few months, or do they last a long time?

Simply seal the unfinished wood with sanitary silicone. For interior use, it’s best to use mold-resistant silicone. Depending on the application, the seal can last from months to years.

I used special waterproof backing panels made of plastic for my Bad-Billy shelves. They are easy to install and provide excellent protection against moisture.

Thanks for the tips so far! One additional question: How does moisture behave with open shelves in the bathroom? Is it better to install doors or choose open compartments to prevent mold and moisture damage?

Open compartments allow better air circulation, which reduces the risk of mold. However, doors protect against splashes, so combine both depending on the location.
