Good morning everyone! I’m planning to organize my IKEA Malm drawer dresser in a double-row arrangement because I really want to create more workspace. The challenge is to stack and place the two Malm dressers both vertically and side-by-side so that they stand securely, remain easily accessible, and ideally still allow for the maximum drawer length to be used.

Does anyone have good ideas or experience with storing Malm drawers in a double-row setup without making the drawers difficult to operate or the structure unstable? I imagine some kind of sturdy frame or connector would be useful, but maybe there are other clever solutions? I would appreciate any tips on proven methods, possible modifications, or alternatives!

I would like to return to the question:

A key issue with a double-row setup is the usability of the drawers. Usually, with double the width, there is one row in front and one behind – but are the rear drawers physically accessible when the front dressers are fixed in place?

Without a sliding or folding mechanism, the back row becomes impractical. Perhaps so-called "mobile pedestal units" under the front dresser could be helpful?

I would recommend:

- Place the dressers side by side on a level surface.
- Connect them with metal brackets.
- Secure them to the wall.

Double rows with stacked dressers quickly become unsafe and inconvenient.

If stacking is absolutely necessary, I would suggest building a sort of base under the top unit. This way, the space between the dressers can be used for cables or small objects, and stability is improved. It creates a gap and prevents direct pressure from the lower dresser on specific points.

Additionally, for double-row drawers, it might be helpful to use full-extension drawer slides or to optimize the drawer extension to ensure full accessibility.

Placing the second dresser on sturdy supports or a shelf firmly fixed to the wall
That is indeed a sensible method!

However, this definitely requires careful anchoring of the shelf to the wall, ideally using several wall plugs to distribute the load. It is important that the construction takes into account the potentially increased height and thus the tipping safety factor.

In my DIY experience, I have often used shelves as intermediate levels – this saves a lot and ensures safe usability.

I find the whole idea really exciting! :-)

The most important aspects are safety and accessibility.

When it comes to storing Malm drawers in double rows, I would definitely recommend securing the individual dressers together with sturdy connectors and making sure they are firmly attached to the wall. And honestly, such a setup can also work really well as a room divider!

I think the suggestion of adding an intermediate shelf or a base is excellent – it allows you to stay creative while keeping things organized! 🙂
