Why are the drawer slides on Malm dressers sometimes problematic?

Hello everyone, I have been using a MALM dresser from IKEA for a while and have noticed issues with the drawer slides on some of the drawers. The drawers don’t always glide smoothly, they can stick, or sometimes come off their tracks. I understand that there are metal or roller slides, but why do Malm models seem to have these slide issues so often? Are there any design weaknesses or material problems causing this? I would appreciate detailed experiences or technical explanations to better understand the issue.

The issues with MALM drawer slides often stem from the materials used and the sliding mechanism. MALM dressers typically use simple ball-bearing slides that are not full-extension. This means the drawer can only be pulled out partially, which limits stability.

Another factor is the load capacity of the slide. Since MALM is often made with affordable materials, the plastic or metal components of the slide tend to bend or wear under heavy load. This results in a sticking sensation or uneven movement.

Additionally, installation errors can cause problems: improperly mounted slides, slightly misaligned drawers, or insufficient fastening can affect the slide’s performance.

Too much weight in the drawers quickly leads to malfunctioning drawers.

Regularly clean and check whether the runners are free.

Follow the assembly instructions carefully; this is often the cause.

That’s really clever how MALM looks, but the drawer slides can be quite tricky! 🙂

I had some issues at first too, but after lubricating the rails a bit and making sure the drawers were properly mounted, they work perfectly! So don’t give up, there are solutions! :-)

That explains a lot, but I find the general criticism somewhat too sweeping. IKEA furniture is designed with price in mind, and the choice of simple ball-bearing slides is likely a cost-benefit decision.

It would be more interesting to know if users report issues mostly caused by installation errors or improper use rather than poor-quality materials.

Who has experience that can confirm or refute the design-related problem?

This matches my observation: the lower drawers are indeed loaded heavier, which seems to cause more issues with MALM compared to other dressers.

What would be typical mistakes to watch out for? Are there checklists or guidance on which assembly points are critical?
