Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while and hope to get some helpful advice here in the forum: How can I securely stabilize my IKEA Billy bookcases on a carpeted floor?
The problem is that the bookcases feel a bit unstable on the carpet, probably due to the soft surface. I have already tried to anchor them to the wall using the provided wall mounts, but because of the carpet, I can’t find a truly stable solution. Are there any proven methods to securely fix the feet of the bookcases or generally improve their stability without damaging the carpet?
I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

I think the Billy shelf is quite sturdy for the price! Especially if you know a few handy tricks 🙂
Sure, you can always spend more, but who wants that? The simple solution with wooden boards and wall anchors is totally enough to use the shelf properly and even add more stability without much effort.
And that’s amazing when you can achieve something so good on a tight budget! 🙂

Maybe it’s better to invest in a different shelf if it needs to stand firmly on carpet under heavy use!

Thank you very much in advance for the many helpful answers!
One more question about the wooden boards under the feet: How thick and large should they be approximately to ensure they are stable enough, but do not sink too much into the carpet or damage the surface?
And regarding wall mounting: Are there specific anchors or screws that are better suited when you have a wooden floor with carpet underneath? I’m a bit concerned that there might always be some slight movement, even after screwing them in.

How thick and large should the wooden boards roughly be?I recommend 1 cm thick MDF or plywood boards, about 8x8 cm (3x3 inches) in size. This size distributes the weight well and noticeably stabilizes the base. Thinner boards are too flexible, while thicker ones are more stable but often unnecessary and harder to handle due to their weight.

Are there special anchors or screws for carpeted and wooden floors? If you have a solid wood wall or at least a stable wooden surface, simple wood screws that go directly into the wood are sufficient. For drywall, I recommend using metal expansion anchors, which also hold well in softer materials.
It is normal to notice some slight movement after the initial fastening; this usually settles after a few days as the shelf adjusts to its position.
Hey everyone! Great thread here!
My addition: I attached self-adhesive anti-slip pads (small black rubber pads) under the feet of my BILLY shelf. They greatly increase grip on the carpet and prevent the shelf from sliding away with slight pressure.
This works really well – especially in combination with wooden bases and securing the unit to the wall.
It’s amazing how much stability you can achieve with simple means! 😉

Also, if you make sure the base (wood or MDF board) is clean and level, you’ll have a very solid foundation for shelves on carpeted floors.
Additionally, I recommend regularly checking the wall anchors – carpet and wood floors can change due to humidity or temperature, which might cause the fittings to loosen over time.
