Hello everyone, I am planning to set up several Billy bookcases in my apartment on carpeted floors and want to make sure they stand stable and secure there. My main concern is that the bookcases might wobble or tip over on the carpet, especially when taking something out or putting something in. Are there any proven methods or special tricks to securely fasten or stabilize the Billy bookcases on carpeted floors? I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

The carpet is quite thick and has a high pile, maybe around 1.5 cm (0.6 inches).

That’s exactly the point! 🙂 I have a thick carpet like that myself, and sometimes standard rubber underlays aren’t enough. A combination of a solid base board (e.g., plywood) plus a non-slip mat works really well. It provides excellent grip!

A special clamp type that holds without screws in the floor.

Sounds interesting! So far, I’ve only used the usual IKEA wall anchors. But a clamp fastener would be perfect if you want to protect the floor. Maybe check hardware stores or look online for "wall mounting without drilling"!

Place thick felt pads plus a small wooden board as a base under the feet, then secure it with Ikea wall mounts. This way, both the floor and carpet remain undamaged.

It is also important that the wooden panels are not too slippery. It is best to choose a matte surface or to apply anti-slip tape. This way, the shelf remains stable under load.

I also spent a long time thinking about how to securely place the shelf on carpet. What helped me was stabilizing the area underneath the shelf with small wooden wedges, so there was no room for movement. Even if it sounds a bit improvised, it worked great on my plush carpet.

Additionally, I want to emphasize that wall anchoring is absolutely necessary. I once had a shelf without it, and the risk of tipping was really high.

In summary, I would recommend:

1. Use plywood or plastic sheets as a stable base under the feet to prevent floor damage.
2. Add small anti-slip mats or felt pads to stop slipping on the base.
3. Always use the Billy wall mounting; it is essential for safety and prevents tipping.
4. If you don’t want to drill holes in the hardwood floor, consider alternatives like clamp profiles or specialized clamp brackets.

This combination protects both the shelf and your floor while providing the stability you need. Good luck!
