Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble my new Ikea Platsa shelving system at home. The problem is that the floor in the room where the shelf will stand is quite uneven – there are height differences of several millimeters up to nearly one centimeter (approximately 0.4 inches), especially near the corner. My question is: What is the best way to secure Ikea PLATSA shelves on uneven floors so that they stand firmly and don’t wobble? Is there a way to compensate for the unevenness without having to level the entire floor extensively? I am also interested in practical solutions that can be adjusted afterward in case the floor shifts slightly or the shelf is moved. Thanks in advance for your tips!

For uneven floors, I generally recommend using a combination of sliding rails and adjustable feet to ensure optimal stability. Specifically for PLATSA, you can use Ikea’s standard adjustable feet, which allow for about 2 cm (1 inch) of height adjustment. If there are larger differences, small furniture wedges made of wood or rubber placed under the feet might also be helpful.
If that is not enough, it would be advisable to build some kind of substructure – for example, from wooden battens – that you precisely level to the floor height. The PLATSA unit can then be attached to this. This prevents wobbling and creates a stable base.
Finally, you should always secure the unit to the wall, as Ikea recommends. This significantly improves stability, especially on uneven floors.

My question is: How can I best secure Ikea PLATSA shelves on uneven floors so that they stand firmly and don’t wobble? To stabilize PLATSA shelves on uneven floors, I recommend the following approach:
- Use adjustable furniture feet (Ikea offers compatible feet with threaded height adjustment, typically up to 2 cm (0.8 inches)).
- For larger unevenness, rubber wedges or small wooden shims can be used as a base; these should be precisely aligned to avoid pressure points.
- Another option is to use adjustable shelving rails or a wooden substructure that is leveled in advance with a spirit level.
- The shelving unit should always be secured to the wall (using wall anchors or fixing rails) to minimize the risk of tipping despite floor unevenness.
It is important that the feet not only level the unit but also prevent slipping to avoid damage to the materials.

Why not simply treat the floor itself or install a continuous underlay that evens out the entire level? This way, you can place the shelving unit on a firm, flat surface. The risk of tipping over is eliminated more effectively in the long run than with any temporary shims. Especially with PLATSA, the construction isn’t so solid that you should risk any careless fiddling under the base.
Besides, how stable is the wall the shelf will be attached to? Without a proper fix to the wall, any solution involving an uneven floor seems quite careless, in my opinion.

But let's be honest: not everyone has the time or inclination to sand, fill, or install a subfloor right away—especially if it’s a rental apartment or a temporary project.
A practical and quick solution is actually a combination of adjustable feet and small wedges. If you add a non-slip material to the wedges, there’s no risk of slipping.
My tip: for really stubborn unevenness under the feet, just place silicone pads in between. They provide some give, improve grip, and compensate for minor fluctuations very well. This way, you can still make adjustments to the shelf even after a few months, if necessary. 😉
