I am about to move and want to disassemble my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets without risking any damage, so I can easily reassemble them later. Since some of the cabinets are quite large and heavy, I am looking for a safe and efficient method that also includes the removal of doors, drawers, and interior fittings. Does anyone have good tips or a step-by-step guide on the best way to proceed? I am especially interested in advice on protecting the components and screws, and whether any special tools are helpful.

I recommend placing all screws into small containers with labels after loosening them to avoid mixing things up during assembly.

Labeling is actually a great idea, thanks! What would you recommend – bags or boxes? And what are your experiences with reusing the Metod hinges? Do I need to replace them, or can they withstand multiple disassemblies and assemblies? I’m a bit unsure about that.

Bags are usually sufficient; boxes look nicer if you have plenty of space. Hinges typically withstand multiple assemblies and disassemblies and only need to be replaced if there is visible damage.

Great question! I’ve moved my Metod cabinet twice now without a single scratch! Important: Take your time, pack everything carefully, and label multiple times so you don’t get confused!

And of course, the hinges are really sturdy – I even replaced some because I scratched them badly during transport, but that was more my fault 🙂

You can do it!

I know how stressful moving can be. Especially when you have to take apart delicate furniture like Ikea Metod cabinets, it’s common to feel unsure about whether everything will stay intact. What really helped me was staying calm before starting the disassembly and coming up with a clear system: taking photos, labeling screws, and packing everything carefully.

If you like, feel free to share exactly where you still have uncertainties. Sometimes it’s small concerns about handling the hinges or back panels that raise bigger questions. We’re happy to help and share our experiences.
