Hello everyone, I bought an Ikea Metod kitchen countertop and have now noticed minor signs of wear such as scratches and unevenness on the surface. My question is: How can I sand an Ikea Metod countertop myself without damaging the surface? Are there any specific sanding methods or tools you would recommend? I’m generally thinking of starting with fine sandpaper, but I’m unsure how much material can be removed safely and how to treat the surface afterward to make it durable and visually appealing again. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

It is also important to mention that Metod countertops often have a plastic or melamine coating, which behaves differently when sanding compared to solid wood.

So:
- You should never sand aggressively when dealing with scratches.
- Light sanding with fine grit can help with dull spots, but deep scratches usually damage the protective layer.
- Alternatively, a special melamine or plastic repair pen might help to visually conceal the scratches.

If you really want to sand, keep in mind that you cannot treat the surface like wood with oils afterwards. Instead, it should be finished with a suitable protective lacquer or maintenance sealant.

These are mainly light scratches from kitchen utensils, with some areas where the surface has become slightly dull. There are no deep damages.

Thanks for the additional information! You can gently work on the dull areas using very fine sandpaper, for example, grit 400-600. I recommend using a sanding block to ensure an even sanding surface.

It is also important to use a circular motion while sanding, not only in one direction. Afterwards, clean the surface thoroughly to remove all dust. For aftercare, use a special maintenance oil designed for melamine-coated surfaces—do not use regular wood oil.

By the way, do you have access to a random orbital sander? It often provides a more even finish than hand sanding and could make the job easier for you.

Random orbit sanders are good, but I would be very careful with the settings due to the delicate surface and thin melamine coating. Low speeds and very fine sandpaper are essential. Otherwise, it's better to sand by hand using a sanding block. This gives you more control over the surface and reduces the risk of removing too much material.

For maintenance, a special care oil for melamine-coated surfaces is suitable; regular wood oil must not be used.

Exactly, this is a very important point! There are specific care products for plastics or melamine-coated kitchen countertops that should not be confused with wood oil.

- I would also recommend thoroughly cleaning the surface with a damp cloth after sanding and allowing it to dry well for several hours.
- Then apply the care product evenly using a lint-free cloth.
- Please avoid using too much to prevent streaks.

If you notice the scratches are very visible, you can also try using a fine polishing pad, which may help restore the shine.

Lightly sand with 400-grit or finer sandpaper, then clean the surface and use a plastic care stick. This repairs the scratches and maintains the protection of the panel.

Thank you for the many detailed responses! In summary, I will carefully sand the surface by hand using fine sandpaper (400-600 grit), since I don’t have an orbital sander, and then apply a maintenance oil or treatment suitable for melamine-coated countertops. If the scratches remain too visible, I will consider using repair pens. I’ll be happy to update you on how it went!
