Hello everyone, I have a problem with the doors of my Billy bookshelves from Ikea. Some of the doors no longer close properly; they sometimes remain slightly open or get stuck when closing. I suspect that an adjustment of the hinges is needed to improve the fit and closing of the doors. Can someone explain exactly how to properly adjust these Billy doors? Which screws do I need to loosen or turn, and what is the best way to restore smooth closing? Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello, with Billy doors, the hinges are usually adjustable. Open the door and locate three screws on the hinges: one adjusts the door sideways, one adjusts the depth, and one adjusts the height. To improve the closing, mainly turn the sideways screw to better align the door with the cabinet. Then check if the door closes flush.

Exactly, and remember to make adjustments very gently! 🙂 If you turn it too much, it might cause the door to bind somewhere else. The first time I tried this, I almost lost it, and the door ended up completely warped. So it’s better to make several small adjustments and test how the door behaves between each step. If the door sticks in any way, cleaning or lubricating the hinges can help. I recently used hinge oil – now it works like new! 😉

For clarification: The hinges used on Billy shelves are so-called concealed hinges, adjustable in three directions – vertically, horizontally (sideways), and in depth. Vertical adjustment is usually made by loosening the mounting plate on the cabinet body, which allows more visual positioning flexibility. Horizontal adjustment is done via a central screw at the front of the hinge, allowing you to move the door sideways. Depth adjustment changes the distance between the door and the front edge of the cabinet to ensure flush closing. It is also important to tighten all hinge screws evenly to avoid stress. If the door does not close properly, check whether the correct hinges for the door size have been used – sometimes different types of hinges are used on the same shelves.

That’s a valid point; however, I have found that loosening the mounting plate is not always the best option, as it may cause the hinge to come completely loose, resulting in the door sagging.

I also wonder: who among you has checked whether the closing issues might be due to manufacturing tolerances of the Billy doors? I have repeatedly experienced that irregularly warped doors make any adjustment more difficult. In such cases, extended fine-tuning doesn’t provide a satisfactory solution, but rather reworking or replacing the door is needed.
