Hello everyone,
I want to paint my Billy shelves, but I’m concerned about damaging the surface or causing unsightly spots and bubbles. The shelves have a melamine-coated surface, and I’m unsure if and how I should properly prepare them to achieve a durable, clean paint finish.
My question is: How can I paint Billy shelves without ruining the surface? What preparation steps are necessary, which types of paint work best on melamine surfaces, and are there any special techniques or tools I should use?
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello mikefar,
I would recommend approaching the project in three steps:
1. Preparation: The melamine-coated surface is very smooth and water-repellent, which makes painting difficult. Therefore, you should first lightly sand the surface with 240-grit or finer sandpaper to ensure adhesion. Important: Do not sand too aggressively, as this can remove the protective layer.
2. Priming: Be sure to use a special adhesion primer designed for plastic or melamine, such as a two-component (2K) primer. This ensures long-lasting adhesion and prevents peeling later on.
3. Painting: It is best to use acrylic paint or spray paint suitable for furniture. Apply several thin coats, allowing each to dry thoroughly. Adequate ventilation is also important.
Avoid thick layers of paint or wet-on-wet techniques, as these can easily cause bubbling and uneven spots.
In summary: lightly sand, use a special primer, then apply several thin paint layers.

I also find that on such smooth surfaces, using a paint roller with a fine texture often leaves unattractive patterns. Spray paints usually produce a much more even finish.
And don’t be afraid of sanding—that’s really the most important step to ensure the paint adheres well and doesn’t get ruined!
Oh, and be patient with drying—it's better to wait than to apply another coat too early.
Wow, there are really a lot of great tips here!
I painted my BILLY shelves myself last year and can confirm: the primer is worth its weight in gold! Without it, the paint would have completely peeled off, which was really frustrating.
I first lightly sanded the shelves, cleaned them thoroughly, then applied two thin coats of primer. After that, I applied several thin layers of acrylic paint. The result was really smooth and nice!
No rushing, it takes time – but the result is definitely worth it! 🙂
