Hello everyone,

I want to paint my Billy shelves, but I’m concerned about damaging the surface or causing unsightly spots and bubbles. The shelves have a melamine-coated surface, and I’m unsure if and how I should properly prepare them to achieve a durable, clean paint finish.

My question is: How can I paint Billy shelves without ruining the surface? What preparation steps are necessary, which types of paint work best on melamine surfaces, and are there any special techniques or tools I should use?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

A melamine surface is definitely not a typical wooden substrate and reacts quite differently to paints. Therefore, it would be helpful to know whether the shelf components can be disassembled to allow for even treatment on all sides.

Additionally, you should consider whether you really want to paint or perhaps opt for a film or even a special chalk-based powder coating, which often adheres better to smooth surfaces.

Then treat it with a primer suitable for smooth surfaces.

Exactly – the primer is essential, but many underestimate the importance of choosing the right product. I haven’t seen a specific recommendation for a suitable primer here yet. I suggest using a two-component (2K) primer if possible.

Just briefly: after sanding, wipe with a damp cloth and allow to dry thoroughly.

Otherwise, as already mentioned, use a primer and then apply several thin coats of paint.

A 2K primer sounds complicated at first, but it’s really effective. You just need to work quickly before it hardens 🙂

However, if you’re not experienced with painting, mikefar, I would suggest using a good acrylic-based spray primer for melamine instead – it’s a bit easier to apply, and the results are still great.

Here’s a quick summary from everything mentioned:
- clean the surface
- lightly sand
- apply primer (2K or special spray primer for melamine)
- several thin coats of paint (spray paint is best)
- be patient while drying

Don’t get discouraged, it will look really nice!
