Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question: How can I best use the Ikea Brimnes furniture series to organize small rooms? I understand that Brimnes is primarily designed for bedrooms and living areas that need storage, but the rooms in my apartment are really quite compact, sometimes just over 8 square meters (86 square feet). I am specifically looking for tips on how to make the most of the furniture options – such as wardrobes, dressers, and storage beds – without making the space feel even more cramped due to furniture that is too large or overcrowded. I am interested in practical storage solutions as well as tricks for keeping the overall look tidy and airy. Are there any proven layout concepts using Brimnes that are tailored for small rooms? In particular, how should I best handle the height, depth, and many compartments? Thanks in advance for your experiences and ideas!
Hello Samirla, your question is very well formulated, and I am happy to provide a detailed response. Brimnes furniture, due to its modular design and space optimization, is a solid foundation, especially for small rooms. Here are my recommendations for optimal organization:
- Make full use of vertical space: Brimnes wardrobes and shelves are often up to about 1.80m (6 feet) high, which is ideal for narrow rooms. Mount them on the wall to ensure stability.
- Interior compartmentalization: Use transparent boxes or baskets inside the compartments to keep things organized and improve visibility.
- Beds with drawers offer excellent storage for bedding or seasonal clothing—make sure access is not obstructed by the room layout.
- For dressers, consider equipping the drawers with dividers to prevent small items from getting mixed up.
- Regarding the sense of space: Combine Brimnes white with mirrors or light wall colors to make the room appear larger.
To assist you better—how large are the rooms exactly, and which furniture pieces do you already have or plan to purchase? This will help provide more specific advice.

Hello Samirla, I completely agree with Palenar and would like to add a few basics: Especially in small rooms, it is important not to overcrowd the space with too many different pieces of furniture. The Brimnes series is well suited for this because it is relatively simple and clean in design.
My advice is to focus mainly on drawers, as they hide everything compared to open shelves – this is very helpful for keeping the room looking tidy. The bed with drawers also offers a really clever storage solution.
Additionally, I would recommend keeping the room’s color scheme calm and using the white version of the Brimnes furniture, which helps to brighten the space. If possible, create extra storage on the walls with hooks or narrow shelves to keep the floor area clear.

Thank you for the initial responses! My rooms are all between 8 and 10 square meters (86 and 108 square feet), each fairly square-shaped with a ceiling height of just over 2.4 meters (8 feet). So far, I have a Brimnes bed with drawers, a dresser with three drawers, and a tall cabinet with doors – all in white. Unfortunately, my rooms sometimes still feel cluttered, probably because I also have various baskets and smaller storage containers that actually create more mess than organization.
Could you possibly provide more detailed recommendations on how to best organize the drawers and compartments internally? Are there any tips on how to maintain functionality without making the space feel cramped, keeping pathways clear, and at the same time using storage space effectively? Would advice on combining the Brimnes furniture with other pieces also be helpful? Thanks!

Small containers or baskets can help organize, but having too many can create visual clutter instead. My specific recommendations:
- Reduce the number and variety of containers, choose uniform sizes and colors, ideally transparent or white.
- Use drawer organizers that divide drawers into sections, so each compartment has a clear purpose and fixed contents.
- For shelves, a uniform box system that is stackable and sized to fit is worthwhile.
Regarding the sense of space: avoid placing furniture directly in front of pathways or windows. Always keep about 30 cm (12 inches) of walking space clear, and arrange furniture so that light sources are not blocked.
What exactly do you still have in terms of ‘small storage’ — can you describe the types? Then I can also advise on materials and shapes.
