Hello everyone,

I recently bought IKEA Platsa shelves with built-in drawers. The problem is that the drawers make quite loud squeaking and rattling noises when opening and closing, which is especially disturbing during quiet moments in the living room.

My question is: How can I make the IKEA Platsa drawers quieter without having to completely rebuild the mechanism? Are there any effective tips or tricks to make the drawer slides smoother or quieter?

I have considered using some kind of lubricant but am unsure which one is suitable, as the mechanisms should not be damaged and nothing sticky or dust-attracting should be used.

I am also open to mechanical solutions, such as inserts or dampers that can be added later.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hey Latar41!

Great topic, I had the same problem, and I can tell you: there are quite a few things you can do to make the PLATSA drawers quieter! 😊

First of all, it usually helps to clean the drawer slides and then lightly treat them with silicone spray – it’s non-sticky, doesn’t attract dust, and ensures much smoother sliding. Just be careful not to use too much spray!

You can also attach small felt or foam strips at the contact points between the drawer and the cabinet. This greatly reduces rattling.

And if you want, you can use those small drawer dampers available at IKEA or hardware stores. They help close the drawer more softly and quietly.

Definitely give these a try, it really makes a difference! Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions! 🚀

Hello,

to reduce noise from the drawers of the IKEA PLATSA series, a combination of cleaning, appropriate lubrication, and possibly damping is recommended. First, the runners should be cleaned of dust, dirt, or small debris, as these are often the cause of friction noises.

Silicone spray is a suitable lubricant because it is non-sticky and does not attract dirt particles. Alternatively, PTFE sprays can be used. It is important not to use oil-based products, as they tend to become dirty over time.

Additionally, felt-like protective strips can be applied to the edges or contact points where the drawer meets the cabinet to minimize vibrations and rattling.

If the existing mechanism causes noise due to too forceful closing, installing drawer dampers is advisable. These slow down the closing motion, resulting in a noticeable reduction of noise.

Please note: When applying lubricants to the runners, use them sparingly to avoid impairing the guidance. If necessary, the drawer can be completely removed for easier treatment.

That's true, silicone spray is ideal.

Additionally, soft felt strips can be attached to the sides to reduce friction and minimize rattling.

Addendum: If the locking mechanism is noisy, small dampers that can be installed may help.
