Hello everyone, I’m looking for proven methods to make IKEA Billy bookcases child-safe without compromising their stability. My two toddlers often play nearby, and I definitely want to prevent the unit from tipping over or parts falling off. I’m especially interested in how to secure the shelves against tipping without having to screw them into the wall, while also fixing the shelves so that children can’t easily pull them out. Are there any specific products, materials, or DIY tips that have worked well for this? Thanks for your experiences and advice!
Thank you for all your helpful suggestions! One more question:
Could fastening the shelves with screws affect their stability? I want to avoid damaging or weakening the shelf supports by drilling or screwing. Is there a particularly sturdy method to secure the shelves without compromising the furniture material?

Screwing the shelves in BILLY units is quite common, as long as you only place the screws in the designated holes or along the edges of the shelves. Shelves made of particleboard or MDF can become brittle if screws that are too long or too thick are used. Therefore, I recommend using short wood screws (e.g., 10-15 mm (0.4-0.6 inches)) and pre-drilling if possible.
Alternatively, there are also magnet or clip systems that make removal more difficult without damaging the material. These are not as secure as screws but are very practical and gentle on the furniture.

Is there a particularly sturdy method to secure shelf boards without weakening the furniture material?A proven method is to use small metal clips or brackets that are fixed to the inside of the shelf and the shelf board. These hold the board from underneath, so no screws go through the visible surface. This keeps both the material and the appearance intact.
This approach provides good support without compromising the stability of the shelf.
This is a great thread! I also used metal brackets and anti-tip straps at our place. 🙂 I can only say, the better you combine these measures, the safer it will be! So, straps attached to the wall, floors secured with brackets, and if you want, add anti-slip pads underneath as well.
My kids tried to get to the floors, but it was almost impossible! 🙂
Good luck with it, it will definitely work!
