Hello everyone, I’m looking for proven methods to make IKEA Billy bookcases child-safe without compromising their stability. My two toddlers often play nearby, and I definitely want to prevent the unit from tipping over or parts falling off. I’m especially interested in how to secure the shelves against tipping without having to screw them into the wall, while also fixing the shelves so that children can’t easily pull them out. Are there any specific products, materials, or DIY tips that have worked well for this? Thanks for your experiences and advice!

The safest solution is wall mounting with the IKEA kit.

Thanks! I was considering not fixing the shelf to the wall because I live in a rental apartment and not all walls can be drilled into.

Place anti-slip pads under the feet or put heavy items on the bottom

That sounds interesting – how well do these pads work on laminate flooring or carpets? Do they provide enough grip?

Attach anti-tip straps to the furniture and the floor or window frame

Could these straps also be attached to door frames? I’m wondering if that might be a good alternative.

Tilt locks on door frames work as long as the frame is stable. It is important that both the mounting and the strap are load-bearing.

Anti-slip pads are a good addition, especially on smooth floors like laminate. However, they do not replace secure wall anchoring. For added safety, always use straps.

You can attach the straps to the door frame if it is stable and well-anchored. However, be careful, as some older door frames may not be strong enough to support the load!

That sounds great! 🙂 For us, regularly loading the bottom shelf with heavy books really added a lot of stability, and the straps on the wall were a real safety bonus.

I also placed felt pads under the shelving, so it hardly slips.

Children love to pull out the shelves, so definitely use metal brackets or other fasteners, otherwise it will be chaos!

How well do these pads work in combination with laminate flooring or carpets?

Anti-slip pads generally provide good grip on laminate flooring, as the rubber materials adhere well to smooth surfaces. On carpets, performance depends on the pile: on very soft or thick carpets, the pads may slip or sink in more easily. For carpets, a combination of heavy objects and straps often works better.

Yes, that can work if the door frame is sturdy and the material does not get damaged. Make sure the attachment does not cause holes or cracks and is strong enough to prevent tipping.
