Hello everyone, I’m looking for proven methods to make IKEA Billy bookcases child-safe without compromising their stability. My two toddlers often play nearby, and I definitely want to prevent the unit from tipping over or parts falling off. I’m especially interested in how to secure the shelves against tipping without having to screw them into the wall, while also fixing the shelves so that children can’t easily pull them out. Are there any specific products, materials, or DIY tips that have worked well for this? Thanks for your experiences and advice!

The safest solution is wall mounting using the IKEA kit. For the shelves, you can use small screws or brackets underneath to prevent children from pulling them out.

Hello Uslapi, I understand your concern well. First of all, it is always safest to securely anchor shelves like BILLY to the wall – this significantly reduces the risk of tipping. If that is not possible due to building regulations or rental agreements, you could alternatively use anti-slip pads under the shelf feet or place heavy items at the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

Regarding child safety for the shelves: There are shelf locks or small brackets that can be installed invisibly to prevent the shelves from being easily removed. IKEA provides child safety devices with some shelves, but these mainly help prevent tipping. It is also advisable to choose light and safe items for the contents, which is recommended anyway when children are involved.

A combination of several measures is recommended. Wall mounting should be done if possible, as it significantly increases stability. If you prefer not to screw the shelf to the wall, using anti-tip straps fixed to the furniture and the floor or window frame is advisable.

Regarding the shelves, I recommend securing them with small screws or special shelf supports that make removal more difficult without permanently altering or damaging the unit.

Oh yes, making BILLY shelves childproof is important—I solved it the same way at my place! 🙂 I secured the shelves to the wall using classic anti-tip furniture straps. That provides very strong safety! For the shelves themselves, I screwed in small metal brackets underneath to prevent the boards from being pulled out easily. This isn’t visible, and children can’t access them that easily!

This is brilliant because you can use the room playfully while still not having to worry about anything happening!

To stabilize BILLY shelves, it is highly recommended to use the original fastening elements from IKEA. Their anti-tip devices are effective in preventing the furniture from tipping over and are usually acceptable in rental properties since they are reversible. Alternatively, adjustable furniture stoppers and non-slip pads can be useful.

Regarding the shelves, I advise using screws or special retaining clips to prevent young children from easily pulling them out. These measures are easy to implement, cause minimal alteration to the furniture, and preserve its load-bearing capacity.
