Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and wanted to install the doors. However, I noticed that the doors don’t close smoothly and are quite noisy. They feel somewhat stiff, which becomes annoying when opening and closing them multiple times.
My question to you is: How can I make the BILLY doors close quietly and smoothly? Are there any tricks or special maintenance tips to improve how smoothly the doors close? So far, I have tried adjusting the hinges slightly, but that only made a small difference. I would really appreciate detailed advice or experiences, especially regarding the hinges and possibly the door material.
Thanks in advance!

try treating the hinges with some silicone spray. Oh yes, silicone spray is really the secret trick! 🙂
LUSAR’s advice to remove the doors is also very helpful. That way, you can work thoroughly, and it becomes much easier.
If all else fails, you can gently sand the hinges if they are metal—but be very careful, or it could make things worse. And definitely avoid WD-40; it has already caused some serious damage here 😉
I’m curious how it will go for you—relax and don’t stress. Quiet BILLY doors are not rocket science! 😉
Hello janfa52,
I’ve been following the discussion and would like to add a few additional suggestions:
It can also help to wipe the hinges with a fine cloth after cleaning and oiling them, to prevent any excess spray from getting on visible surfaces. Additionally, it’s advisable to check the door’s alignment again after treatment. If the door is not perfectly aligned, it will be harder to close and may cause noise.
Regarding the tape on the back panel: from my experience, this is more of a temporary measure from IKEA to secure the doors during transport. You should remove it in the long term, as it can interfere with the normal movement of the doors.
On the subject of door weight: if your doors are particularly heavy, you might consider using additional dampers or different hinges to improve smooth operation, although this is rather unusual for BILLY.
I hope these additional tips are helpful!
