PenonHello everyone,
I am planning to set up several IKEA BILLY bookcases in my apartment. However, the floors in the rooms where the bookcases will be placed are not completely level. There are slight unevenness in the floors, which causes the bookcases to be unstable or wobble slightly. My goal is to find a stable and long-lasting solution to make it easier to position and level the BILLY bookcases on this uneven floor. I would like to avoid extensive floor modifications and not buy expensive special solutions.
How have you solved this problem? Do you know of practical tips, tools, or suitable accessories that are especially recommended for BILLY bookcases on uneven floors? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Penon,
To stabilize BILLY shelves on uneven floors, I recommend first leveling the floor irregularities with small wedges or special furniture leveling wedges made of plastic or wood. These are affordable and available at hardware stores. Particularly effective are adjustable furniture feet, which can sometimes be retrofitted to precisely compensate for height differences.
Additionally, furniture stoppers or anti-slip pads can be placed under the shelves to prevent slipping on smooth surfaces. Another option is to secure the shelves to the wall, which is also intended for BILLY and significantly increases stability.
It is important to align the shelves carefully before loading them and to adjust the feet so that no tipping is possible.

I would also advise you to precisely measure the unevenness of the floor before installation, using a spirit level or a laser level. This way, you can determine exactly which feet need to be adjusted.
Some users recommend using self-adhesive felt pads of varying thickness as a quick and flexible solution. These are easy to find and do not damage either the floor or the furniture.
If possible, I would suggest replacing the standard feet of the shelf with adjustable metal feet. These can provide several centimeters of height adjustment and are permanently stable.
Combining this with wall mounting is always recommended, especially for shelves placed on uneven floors.

adjustable furniture feet, some of which can be retrofittedThat’s already a great tip! I used to work with small rubber pads under the shelf legs, which provide some cushioning and don’t leave any scratches.
Also: I think a slight tilt has its own charm – but if you really want it to be visually and functionally stable, the only solution is: check, adjust, and level it! 🙂
And to add a bit of fun: try slipping a book underneath as a “guerrilla upgrade” – if it stays in place, you’re already on the right track ;-)
But seriously: the classic advice is not to forget wall fastening; that’s half the job with Billy shelves.
Hi, I really like how you clearly outline the solution steps here!
I had a similar issue at home and bought adjustable furniture glides. They’re super easy to screw in, can be adjusted continuously, and the shelf stands rock solid – I thought that was brilliant! Honestly, once the shelf is finally stable, tidying up and organizing becomes twice as enjoyable!
So don’t get discouraged – with the right idea, it will work out naturally. Good luck with it! 🙂
