ᐅ How can I prevent wobbling in fully loaded BILLY shelves?

Good morning everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Billy bookcases, which I have stacked quite high and heavily loaded. Unfortunately, they wobble noticeably when I lean on them or take something out. I have already checked that they are screwed to the wall, which they are, but the wobbling still persists. I am interested in learning what options are available to permanently fix this wobbling with heavily loaded Billy bookcases. Are there special reinforcements, additional anchors, or other tricks to improve stability? Thanks in advance for your advice!

I understand your concern well, especially with fully loaded shelves, the wobbling can easily become annoying. I recently had issues with several shelves myself. What helped me was really the combination of additional fastening and a sturdier back panel. If you're not confident about cutting it yourself, you can also ask for a cutting service at a hardware store. Sometimes it’s also worth switching to the Billy XL model for more stability.

Another tip: Shelves should not rest directly on the floor if the floor is uneven. Small leveling feet or adjustable furniture glides can help reduce wobbling.

Connecting multiple shelves together using brackets can also increase stability. This creates a composite structure that is less prone to wobbling.

Good tip, I might do that.

You can cut a thin MDF board or plywood to the size of the shelf and screw it to the inside of the back panel.

Did you screw the MDF board in or glue it? Is there a preferred method of fixing that won’t damage the shelf?

I recommend screws, as they hold securely and can be removed without residue if small holes are filled with wood filler. Adhesives tend to be less reversible and often damage the surface.

For stability, it also helps to connect the shelf to the wall from above. If possible, install an angle bracket at the top as well. This reduces leverage forces and makes wobbling less likely.
