Good morning everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Billy bookcases, which I have stacked quite high and heavily loaded. Unfortunately, they wobble noticeably when I lean on them or take something out. I have already checked that they are screwed to the wall, which they are, but the wobbling still persists. I am interested in learning what options are available to permanently fix this wobbling with heavily loaded Billy bookcases. Are there special reinforcements, additional anchors, or other tricks to improve stability? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Also install an angle bracket at the top

Exactly, additionally attaching angle brackets to the top shelf beam and the wall provides the most stability.

Oh yes, the idea of using an MDF back panel is great! 🙂 I did it that way myself, and since then everything has stayed really stable. For anyone here facing this issue: go for it, it’s truly a simple solution! And if you secure the shelves to the wall and maybe add small shims at the bottom, any wobbling will be gone – guaranteed! Good luck to everyone! :-)

That's right, it's an effective combination of several measures that shouldn't be underestimated. The wobbling often results from multiple minor causes. When you address all of them, it works perfectly.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips! Tomorrow, I will have an MDF back panel cut and install additional brackets. The idea of using shims or adjustable furniture glides also sounds promising to compensate for uneven floors. I will report back on how it went.

Additionally, when installing the brackets, make sure the wall anchors are properly secured in the wall. Especially with drywall, it can be helpful to use special hollow wall anchors to ensure a firm hold.

This recommendation is important because the wall material directly affects the safety factor of the fastening. For drywall constructions, it is best to choose metal anchors or expansion anchors with high load capacity.
