ᐅ How can I equip IKEA Metod drawers with a soft-close mechanism?

Boli44Hello everyone,
I am planning to equip my Ikea Metod base cabinets with drawers that have automatic closing features (soft-close or push-to-open mechanisms). Since the original fittings are not always ideal, I am interested in how I can retrofit the existing drawer fronts and slides so that the drawers close or open automatically, quietly, and smoothly with a light touch.
Are there any simple retrofit solutions for Metod drawers, such as specific soft-close mechanisms, adapters, or special drawer slides that I can use? What installation steps should be considered, especially regarding the already installed drawer slides?
Also, I would like to know if there are any recommended manufacturers or products that are fully compatible with Ikea Metod. I look forward to your experiences and tips on how to reliably equip my drawers with automatic closing.

The easiest way is to replace the original Metod drawer slides with versions that have integrated soft-close. Ikea offers these partially themselves.
If you want push-to-open, you need special fittings that are simply mounted on the front. Follow the installation instructions exactly.

As a supplement: Ikea Metod drawers usually run on full-extension ball-bearing slides. For soft-close functionality, it is recommended to replace them with so-called "self-closing" full-extension slides. These have an integrated damping system that slows the closing motion and pulls the drawer gently shut.
You should pay attention to:
- The dimensions of the slides, especially the width and installation depth
- The appropriate soft-close model for the existing drawer type (e.g., 30 kg (66 lbs) load rating)
Push-to-open is a separate function and requires different hardware with a pressure mechanism. Often, a spring mechanism is used, which is mounted inside the drawer. Integration with Metod can be somewhat complicated because the handleless front must be precisely adjusted for pressing.
If you are primarily looking for soft-close, original Ikea components are the easiest choice. For push-to-open or hybrid solutions, brands like Blum or Hettich are recommended, as they provide compatible retrofit slides and fittings.
Important: Pay close attention to the exact measurements, as Ikea sometimes uses special dimensions, and check whether the drill holes and mounting points match.

Push-to-Open is a separate mechanism and requires different fittings with a push-release system. This is exactly where I see the most critical point. Push-to-Open systems must be installed very precisely to work reliably – especially with Ikea Metod, where the fronts are not reinforced throughout. I would therefore question whether the effort and risk (misalignment, faster wear) outweigh the benefits.
Additionally, Soft-Close offers a genuine improvement in user comfort, while Push-to-Open often provides more of a design-related added value. May I ask, what is your main goal? Easy closing, or do you need the drawers to be handleless?
Another aspect is long-term compatibility. Some retrofit systems might not work well with the original drawers, which can lead to problems later on.
Hey Boli44,
I did exactly this at my home – retrofitting soft-close on Metod drawers. The best part is that in the end, you hardly notice whether they close manually or automatically. 😌
What helped me:
- I got the original soft-close slides from Ikea, which fit perfectly and are easy to install.
- Important: Tighten all screws before installation and clean the tracks, otherwise the damping will get stuck.
- I didn’t choose push-to-open since I have handles on the fronts. For handleless kitchens, you can find special fittings, but they require more adjustment.
My advice: If you are handy, you can easily do this yourself; otherwise, sometimes it’s worth hiring a professional for precise tuning.
Good luck and don’t worry – your kitchen will be much more comfortable afterward!

I understand that many want the drawers to close quietly and automatically, especially if you have small children or cook a lot. Soft-close is usually a very practical upgrade with hardly any downsides.
Push-to-open sounds cool and modern at first, but I have experienced that it can cause more trouble if the mechanism isn’t perfectly aligned or the front isn’t precisely adjusted.
If you like, please share how your kitchen currently looks (handles, fronts, drawers) and what is most important to you. That way, we can better assist you and recommend the most suitable system.
