Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of securely anchoring my IKEA Platsa shelves to prevent them from tipping over. Since the shelves are quite tall and partially loaded with heavy items, I want to be on the safe side.

My question is: What methods, products, or installation options are available to firmly attach Platsa shelves to the wall or otherwise secure them against tipping, without significantly affecting their appearance?

I am also interested in any practical experience regarding the load capacity of these safety measures and what to pay special attention to during installation, especially if the walls are uneven or made of drywall (plasterboard).

I look forward to your tips and advice, possibly including recommendations for necessary tools or special fasteners.

Hello Faith48,

I would recommend using the supplied wall anchor screws from IKEA. The anchors are suitable for concrete ceilings and walls. If you have drywall, it is better to use special hollow wall anchors.

Always mount the shelves with wall fixings, even if they seem stable. This will reliably prevent tipping.

Hello Faith48,

regarding your question about how to effectively secure IKEA PLATSA shelves against tipping, I would like to address this from a technical perspective:

- The shelves come with designated wall fastenings that should definitely be used. A solid connection screwed firmly into the wall is the best protection against tipping.

- For solid walls, nylon plugs or metal anchors are suitable, depending on the wall material (concrete, brick, aerated concrete). For drywall (plasterboard) walls, cavity anchors or special toggle bolts are recommended.

- Before installation, make sure to level the shelves using a spirit level, as uneven walls can reduce stability. Adjust if necessary with small wooden shims.

- It is also important to distribute the load properly; heavy items should always be stored in the lower part to optimize tipping protection.

- Additional safety can be provided by metal brackets or securing straps mounted behind the shelf and anchored into the wall. These can help distribute the load more effectively.

- Tools: drill, spirit level, screwdriver, plugs, and screws suitable for the wall material.

Proper and professional mounting is essential, as the PLATSA series is modular in construction and may seem relatively unstable if installed incorrectly.

Hello Faith48,

I agree with roryvin’s assessment and would like to add the following:

It is important not to simply ignore the fastening points of the PLATSA shelving unit, as they are designed to match the structure of the shelves. If you have drywall and are unsure whether standard cavity anchors will hold, I recommend using wider metal toggle bolts.

In addition, I always use safety straps (also called anti-tip straps), which can be attached to the top of the shelf frame with a metal plate and then screwed into the wall. These are usually discreet and provide extra security, especially if the shelf is suddenly loaded unevenly.

If you have children or pets, this is definitely worthwhile.

If you plan to expand the shelves later, always install them in a way that allows for modifications without having to take them apart, for example by choosing easily accessible fasteners.

If you like, I can also provide examples of anchor brands and fastening materials that I personally recommend.
