Toandreas15 Dec 2022 08:47Hello everyone,
I am currently working on making my Ikea Pax wardrobe as multifunctional as possible and would like to ask for your ideas and experiences. Specifically, I am interested in how to design the Pax so that it serves not only as a clothing wardrobe but also provides storage for electronics, work tools, or even functions as a small workbench. It is important that the interior remains flexible—that is, individually adaptable and modular so it can be reconfigured easily without much effort.
Which inserts, doors, interior layouts, or additional furniture pieces work best for this? Do you have tips on technical upgrades, smart cable management, or lighting? How do you handle this in everyday use to make optimal use of the space and quickly switch between the different functions?
I look forward to your constructive suggestions and examples!

Hi Toandreas,
very interesting question! I always find it great when Ikea Pax is used not just as a classic wardrobe but also in a really creative way. 😊
What I really like are the modular interior fittings of Pax. For example, you can work with drawers and shelves to organize different items efficiently. For technical accessories or work materials, I would definitely recommend boxes and organizers that can be easily taken in and out.
Cable management? Of course, great idea! I drilled small cable openings in the side panels and used cable clips on the back to keep everything neat. And regarding lighting, the LED strips from Ikea (which also fit Pax) provide excellent interior lighting, especially with motion sensors – very practical when you’re quickly looking for something.
And if you want a workbench variant, try a removable wooden board as a workspace that you can attach to the inside walls with clamps if needed. Just like that, a dust-free workspace that can be stored away!
I hope this helps you move forward! Good luck 🍀

I’d like to approach this more structurally, as the topic of multifunctional use of Ikea Pax is quite complex. Basically, the Pax wardrobe is very well suited for modular use since you can customize the frames, doors, and especially the interior fittings.
Here are a few basic tips:
- Use drawers with dividers to keep small tools or work materials organized.
- Shelves can be replaced with adjustable shelves if needed to accommodate larger items.
- For electronics, it’s recommended to attach cable channels or holders to the back panel, ideally with cutouts to allow easy access to power outlets.
- LED lighting with motion sensors makes it easier to find things quickly.
- If you want to use the wardrobe as an office or workbench, you can either integrate a pull-out work surface or install a fold-down panel that can be lowered when needed.
I suggest you first decide which functions are really a priority for you, so you can plan suitable solutions more effectively. Above all, design the workspace to remain ergonomic.
If you like, I can also provide some sketches or articles on modular interior layouts.
Best regards!

The stability of the Pax can indeed be a limiting factor, especially if you want to install pull-out or foldable work surfaces. It is advisable to ensure a secure wall mounting and not to exceed the maximum load capacity of each component.
For integrating technology and cable management, Ikea’s own solutions like the "Signum" cable trays are suitable; these can be mounted on the back panel of the wardrobe. Alternatively, flexible cable grommets are recommended to ensure access to power outlets without disturbing cable routing.
Lighting should consider not only LED strips but also heat generation; temperatures can rise significantly in enclosed spaces.
For the workbench option, some users try to use the inside of the doors as hanging space for tools, for example, with small pegboards or hook rails.
Recommendation: Before implementation, clearly define the exact load and intended use to ensure the solution remains durable and functional.
