Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring the idea of customizing my IKEA BESTÅ fronts to make them more unique and homely. I’m particularly interested in how to enhance these fronts using wallpaper or fabrics without affecting their functionality or durability. Specifically, I would like to know which types of wallpaper (non-woven wallpaper, vinyl, traditionally painted wallpaper, etc.) or fabrics work best, what to consider during application, and how to achieve a clean and long-lasting surface.

I’m also curious about which adhesive methods or fastening techniques you have had good experiences with. Are there any special preparations for the fronts that should definitely be observed? I would also appreciate any tips on potential problems to avoid, such as issues affecting hinges or handles.

I thought a detailed exchange on this topic would be helpful for everyone wanting to personalize their furniture a bit more. Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

I am adding a technically precise procedure that is especially important for BESTÅ fronts with fabric or wallpaper coverings when higher demands are placed on appearance and durability:

1. Material selection: The fronts are made of particleboard with a melamine surface, which is very smooth and has low absorbency.

2. Preparation:
- Before sanding, applying a primer (acrylic primer) is recommended because regular sandpaper is often not sufficient on melamine.
- Sand with very fine sandpaper (grit 240 to 320) to create a micro-textured surface.

3. Adhesive process:
- For fabrics, I exclusively use solvent-based spray adhesives with strong bonding power.
- Wallpapers can be glued with universal adhesive – in this case, an approved wood or plastic adhesive is advisable.

4. Application tips:
- I use wallpapering tools (e.g., a squeegee) to effectively avoid air bubbles and wrinkles.
- Cut the foil or fabric with a plotter knife.

5. Sealing:
- Varnish not only seals but also prevents fiber bloom and dirt accumulation.
- Apply clear coat in several thin layers, sanding lightly between coats.

Finally: If possible, protect the hinges with a small plastic pad, as thicker coverings can increase mechanical stress.

For fabrics, I use only solvent-based spray adhesives with strong adhesion.

This method is indeed highly recommended; however, it is important to be aware of the health risks and strong odors involved, and to ensure proper ventilation.

After complete drying, seal the surface with a water-based clear coat, which should be matte or satin finish.

This is a critical step. I would like to add that when sealing, compatibility between the adhesive, fabric/wallpaper, and clear coat must be ensured to prevent peeling or discoloration.

Finally, I would like to ask if anyone has experienced issues with heat-sensitive fabrics on the fronts during sealing or processing? Especially with thinner wallpapers, too high a coating temperature can cause warping.
