Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how to customize the doors of the Ikea Pax wardrobe, as the standard options don’t really appeal to me. I’m especially interested in the different ways to alter the surface, for example, to add personal touches to the doors without compromising their stability or functionality. Are there options to repaint the doors, apply adhesive films, or even attach other materials to them?

I would appreciate any tips on what to keep in mind when modifying the doors, such as how to properly handle fittings and hinges, or whether there are specific tools or products that work particularly well.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

Hello Kenpinhas,

Regarding your question about how to customize Ikea Pax doors, there are actually several effective and proven methods. I will go into detail about the options and important points here:

- Painting: The doors are usually made of MDF or particleboard, often with a melamine or foil coating. To repaint the doors, you should first sand the surface thoroughly, especially if there is a foil layer. Use a primer and then apply high-quality acrylic or polyurethane paint, ideally with a spray gun for an even finish.

- Applying adhesive film: Self-adhesive films are a very flexible solution, especially if you prefer patterns or wood looks. It is important to clean the surface meticulously before applying and sometimes lightly abrade it for better adhesion.

- Adding decorative elements: You can attach wooden strips, mirrors, or metal frames to the doors to create more individuality. However, be careful when drilling to avoid compromising the door's stability. Screws and wall plugs should be selected according to the door material.

- Replacing the doors: Ikea sells individual doors that you can easily replace depending on the model. You might also find compatible doors from third-party suppliers with different designs.

- Inside options: You can install lighting inside or apply custom films on glass doors.

Make sure that fittings (hinges, handles) remain compatible when exchanging or modifying the doors. Usually, these doors use standard European hinges, which makes repairs or adjustments easier.

If you want more details about tools or step-by-step instructions, just let me know.

Good luck with your project!

Hello,

you can simply cover the doors with adhesive furniture film or paint them. If painting, sand the surface beforehand to ensure the paint adheres properly. Replacing wooden strips or handles is also quick to do if you want a more personalized touch.

When using adhesive film, make sure it doesn’t create bubbles, as this looks untidy.

More effort is only worthwhile if you can maintain the doors regularly.

I can only confirm that; I did this with my Pax doors, and it required quite a bit of patience, but the result was really nice. What also helped me was cleaning the doors with a degreaser after sanding.

That’s also an important point that shouldn’t be underestimated.

I personally experimented with self-adhesive films as well, but in the long run, the doors became harder to clean. Therefore, depending on the use and location of the cabinet, I would recommend choosing the painting option if you are aiming for durability.

Has anyone ever attached different materials directly to the doors, for example fabric or cork? How stable was that?
