Good morning everyone, I recently purchased several IKEA Malm furniture pieces and now want to childproof them. Since I have young children at home, it is especially important for me to secure the drawers and dressers so they cannot tip over and the little ones don’t get their fingers caught or suffer any other injuries.
My specific question is: How can I childproof Malm furniture, especially regarding wall mounting and securing the drawers? Are there any particular accessories that have proven to be effective, or recommended installation instructions I should definitely follow?
If anyone can share their experience or tips on this topic, especially tricks for wall mounting with minimal effort, I would greatly appreciate your feedback!

An important aspect to consider when childproofing Malm furniture is using the right tools and ensuring the quality of the fasteners.
In addition to the standard parts described in the assembly instructions, I recommend using high-quality wall plugs and screws from a specialist supplier that are designed to handle static loads under tipping conditions.
If you live in a rental apartment and want to avoid damaging the walls, there are also special solutions with tension mounting profiles that support the furniture without leaving holes. However, these are usually more expensive.
For truly secure drawer locks, automatic latch systems are suitable, which can only be opened by adult-pressure and pull forces. These are typically not included in standard IKEA sets.
I would also like to emphasize this: a thorough check after installation is essential.

The fasteners must be checked with pull tests to ensure they hold securely.

Hello Tauma, I’m speaking up as well since I have two young children and recently childproofed a MALM dresser.
I can confirm that securing it to the wall is the most important step – I fixed it with a sturdy metal bracket and additionally installed drawer locks that work well for my child, as they are easy to open but require some effort.
I also recommend not placing the furniture directly next to a radiator or other potential hazards and keeping some distance to prevent children from getting hurt on hot surfaces.
It’s also important to carefully follow all assembly instructions and check everything again after installation to ensure it is securely fixed.
If you have any specific questions about assembly, I’m happy to help.
