Good morning everyone, I recently purchased several IKEA Malm furniture pieces and now want to childproof them. Since I have young children at home, it is especially important for me to secure the drawers and dressers so they cannot tip over and the little ones don’t get their fingers caught or suffer any other injuries.

My specific question is: How can I childproof Malm furniture, especially regarding wall mounting and securing the drawers? Are there any particular accessories that have proven to be effective, or recommended installation instructions I should definitely follow?

If anyone can share their experience or tips on this topic, especially tricks for wall mounting with minimal effort, I would greatly appreciate your feedback!

Hello Tauma, I can definitely help you with that!

For childproof installation of the MALM furniture, securing it to the wall is essential. IKEA usually provides a mounting kit that you should definitely use, as narrow dressers are especially prone to tipping over. You can screw the brackets into the wall using anchors and then attach the furniture to them. It is advisable to choose screws and anchors suitable for your wall type (concrete, drywall, etc.).

To protect the drawers, drawer locks that are installed on the inside are recommended. I have been using child safety locks with Velcro or latches for years, which prevent children from opening the drawers but still allow easy access for adults.

Also, make sure no sharp corners are left unprotected. If you use the IKEA accessories and properly secure the furniture to the wall, everything should be very safe.

I would like to join Brian here and also add that I was initially unsure about the best way to make the furniture childproof.

When it comes to childproofing the MALM furniture, wall mounting is really the key.

This wall mounting gave me a really good feeling because I wanted to be sure that nothing could tip over. Of course, it is an extra effort, but when it comes to child safety, it is definitely worth it!

At first, I was also worried that the drawer locks might be too inconvenient since little ones “always want something quickly” – but I found that they can be opened easily by adults, while the kids cannot.

Sometimes this makes daily life a little easier and safer at the same time. Maybe you could also use softer locks if the children are still too young for harsher catches?

For a factual basis: Due to their typically narrow design, the MALM series dressers have an increased risk of tipping over if they are not secured to the wall.

According to consumer protection agencies, furniture anchors or safety screws are the recommended solution to prevent tipping.

Your first step should be to identify the type of wall (e.g., concrete, brick, drywall) and then use appropriate wall plugs and screws accordingly. The fastening kits supplied by IKEA are rather standard, so for drywall, special cavity anchors are advisable.

Additionally, you should use tested child safety locks for the drawers, which ideally can be easily operated by adults with one hand but not by children.

Another important aspect is checking the furniture after installation: the attachment should be tested with pull tests to ensure it is firmly secured. Regular checks after a few weeks are also recommended.

Additionally, I would like to add that it can be helpful to consider the height of the furniture in advance to prevent children from easily using it for climbing.

The order of assembly is also important:

First, secure the furniture to the wall, then fix the drawers. Some people assemble the furniture completely and only attach it to the wall at the end, which can cause problems if not handled carefully.

For wall mounting, there are recommended sets available, for example from manufacturers like “Roba” or even special IKEA accessories that are more stable than the standard anchors.

This should not be underestimated, as improperly secured furniture can easily topple over under the weight of children.

Hey everyone! This topic is really important – about a year ago, I also made my MALM dresser childproof, and I’m really happy with the result! 😊

The most important thing: Never just place the pre-assembled parts; always securely attach them to the wall using the supplied brackets! That gives such a great peace of mind!!! ❤️

And for the drawer locks: I used inexpensive clamp locks that are still easy to operate – the kids actually understand pretty quickly that there are limits 🙂

I totally agree with that!

It’s a small effort but definitely worth it because you can really use the furniture worry-free afterwards. So, let’s get to the screws! You can do it, Tauma! 🙂
