I recently purchased several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series and am generally satisfied with the quality and design. However, I am concerned about how to best protect these items from unsightly scratches and signs of wear. Especially with the rather smooth, coated engineered wood material, small scratches tend to be quite noticeable. Therefore, I am interested in learning which methods or materials are ideal for long-term scratch protection for Brimnes furniture without affecting its appearance or feel. Do you have any experience with specific protective films, waxes, varnishes, or other care products? Also, do you have any practical tips on general handling or furniture placement to help avoid scratches? Thank you in advance for your help!

First of all: Brimnes is sturdy, but like any furniture, it will show signs of wear and tear over time in the form of scratches. My recommendation: use felt pads under anything that’s moved – they’re really invaluable.
Also: small scratches? You can touch them up with a furniture repair marker from a hardware store. They come in many shades, including ones for light surfaces. And if you ever feel the surface looking dull, use a slightly damp cloth with a bit of dish soap – it works wonders.
Wax? Better to avoid it, as it makes the surface slippery and can cause more problems.

To prevent scratches on Brimnes furniture, I recommend the following measures based on material properties and practical experience:
- Use felt pads or rubber pads under items placed on the furniture and under drawers
- Use placemats or protective mats in areas with frequent contact
- Clean only with soft cloths; avoid abrasive cleaners
Using protective films can be helpful if they are specifically designed for melamine-coated surfaces and do not leave residues when removed. Care products like wax or oil are not recommended, as they may damage the surface.

For Brimnes furniture, I recommend transparent felt pads under all movable parts and where items are placed.Absolutely right, but I would add that the thickness and hardness of the felt pads also matter, because pads that are too soft wear out quickly and cannot fully prevent scratches caused by tiny particles.

Is there solid evidence that these measures are helpful in the long term, or do they rather increase the risk of dirt accumulating underneath, making it harder to clean? That’s a valid concern. Indeed, regular inspection and cleaning of the pads and the underside of the furniture are essential to remove any buildup. Otherwise, protective films are only truly effective if they are precisely matched to the furniture surface and replaced regularly.
Thank you for all the very helpful responses so far! To summarize, I understand that felt pads are essential, especially under moving parts and shelves. Regular, gentle cleaning and checking of the protective measures also seem important and should not be overlooked.
What I’m particularly interested in is whether there are any specific product recommendations for protective films or furniture pins that have proven effective for Brimnes furniture. Also, does anyone have experience with how often these protective films should be replaced to actually provide benefits rather than causing problems?
I’m asking deliberately because I want to avoid the furniture developing an unattractive or artificial appearance.
