Hello everyone,

I’m planning to assemble some Ikea Hemnes furniture in the next few days, mainly dressers and bedside tables, and I’d like to keep the effort and the amount of tools needed as minimal as possible. My question is: How can I assemble Ikea HEMNES furniture with fewer tools without compromising the stability or quality of the assembly?

I’m aware that the standard tools usually required are an Allen key, a screwdriver, and sometimes a hammer. I’m wondering if there are any alternatives, tricks, or aids that could help me complete the job with a small toolset, for example, just a multitool or something I always have on hand, like a small screwdriver or similar.

It’s also important to me that the solution does not deviate too much from Ikea’s standard process since I’m not a professional and want to follow the instructions as closely as possible. I look forward to your experiences, tips, and especially if anyone understands how this could specifically work with HEMNES.

Thanks in advance!

I would like to add the aspect of efficiency to the discussion:

If your goal is to minimize the number of tools, I recommend the following approach:

- Use the included Allen wrench, as it fits precisely and prevents damage to the screws.
- Replace a rubber mallet or hammer by holding components in place and pressing them gently where possible.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver for screws that allow it, instead of multiple types of screwdrivers.

The key points in handling are:

- Avoid applying excessive force when screwing to prevent damage to the threads.
- Work calmly and sequentially according to the instructions.

This way, you can keep your tools to a minimum without compromising assembly. Stability and quality should not be sacrificed.

In short: Not everything needs to be replaced, but a targeted tool set with multifunction capabilities helps.
What I also find quite funny: For some screws, even a small flathead screwdriver works, which many people already have at home.
I’ve tried that often as well – it works surprisingly well with some Allen screws, but you really have to be careful not to strip the screw or damage the head. 😅

Besides that, I recommend playing good music during assembly and looking at it more as fun rather than a tedious task. Then the type of tools doesn’t really matter, as long as you have enough patience and coffee ready! ☕😉

Sometimes it also helps to use a small board as a base; it makes handling easier and reduces the need for extra tools. You can hold or press it while screwing.
If you want everything in one tool, use a good multi-bit screwdriver with a hex (Allen) bit.
I totally agree. A multi-bit screwdriver with interchangeable bits, especially hex (Allen), Phillips, and flathead, makes assembly more flexible and saves a lot of space in the toolbox.

Additionally, such a tool is quite affordable and versatile, not just for flat-pack furniture.

For me, it is the best minimal tool for all furniture assembly.

Good point! When assembling Hemnes furniture, I also like the small manual hex key, but when you get deeper into the assembly hassle, a cordless screwdriver can really work wonders.

But yes, if you prefer a minimalist setup, it’s better to have solid hand tools—you can handle those well even in tight spaces, and you get a better feel for the furniture coming together.

My secret tip: Bring plenty of water and keep a relaxed attitude—tools are important, but your mood makes a much bigger difference! 😊
