Jeronimone21 Jul 2024 08:27Hello everyone,
I’m planning to assemble some Ikea Hemnes furniture in the next few days, mainly dressers and bedside tables, and I’d like to keep the effort and the amount of tools needed as minimal as possible. My question is: How can I assemble Ikea HEMNES furniture with fewer tools without compromising the stability or quality of the assembly?
I’m aware that the standard tools usually required are an Allen key, a screwdriver, and sometimes a hammer. I’m wondering if there are any alternatives, tricks, or aids that could help me complete the job with a small toolset, for example, just a multitool or something I always have on hand, like a small screwdriver or similar.
It’s also important to me that the solution does not deviate too much from Ikea’s standard process since I’m not a professional and want to follow the instructions as closely as possible. I look forward to your experiences, tips, and especially if anyone understands how this could specifically work with HEMNES.
Thanks in advance!

Hey Jeronimone,
first of all, great to see you getting into this topic in such detail! 😄 With HEMNES furniture, the Allen key is usually your best friend – IKEA typically includes a small one with most pieces. If you want to keep tools to a minimum, I’d recommend getting a small, inexpensive multi-function Allen key. You can even attach it to your keychain, so you always have it handy.
What I also find funny: For some screws, a small flathead screwdriver, which many people already have at home, works surprisingly well. It often fits the hex socket and can replace the Allen key in a pinch – but be careful, this doesn’t always work and might damage the screws a bit.
Another idea: A small cordless screwdriver with an Allen bit will cut the assembly time in half – but of course, that means more tools you’d need. 😅
In general, the biggest challenge with HEMNES is usually tightening the screws properly, not necessarily which tool you use. So a bit of a gentle touch helps more than having the ultimate special tool.
Good luck with the assembly! Feel free to share how it went if you like!

Hello Jeronimone,
I’d like to add that Ikea HEMNES furniture is often very well designed, especially for beginners. That’s why the included tools generally cover exactly what you need.
If you want to minimize the tools required, my tip is to use the supplied Allen wrench for assembly. If you want to avoid using other tools beyond that, keep in mind that some screws might be turned with a standard Phillips screwdriver if you have one at hand.
There are also situations where tools with rubberized handles offer the advantage of working faster without the risk of rounding off the screws.
Additionally, I recommend following the instructions carefully and laying out all the parts before starting. This way, you can better assess if and what additional tools are really necessary.
And: Sometimes it helps to place a small rubber or leather pad under the screws to avoid scratches, even if you’re assembling with fewer tools.
If there are specific parts of the instructions that frustrate you, feel free to post them here, and we can look at them together.

Allen keys are often only needed for screws that don’t allow any alternative.
A Phillips screwdriver can replace many screws.
A hammer can be substituted by firm pressure or objects like a piece of wood.
If you want everything in one tool, choose a good multi-bit screwdriver with an Allen bit.

Hello Jeronimone,
I’m happy to take the time to approach this topic more systematically. Although many say you should always use the original tools supplied with Ikea furniture, the setup process can definitely be made more efficient.
First of all, it’s important to understand which types of screws and fasteners the HEMNES series uses:
- Allen screws for the load-bearing structure
- Wood screws with a Phillips head
- Dowels for aligning components
The Allen key is usually the tricky part, as it has a special shape and other tools only help to a limited extent. A quick tip: a long Allen screwdriver or a socket wrench adapter with an Allen profile makes the work much easier because it reduces the effort required.
If you want to minimize the amount of tools, you can focus on a good electric multi-bit screwdriver with the right bits. This allows you to quickly loosen and tighten many screws. The effort and risk of over-tightening the screws are noticeably reduced.
Of course, using fewer tools doesn’t necessarily shorten the number of steps, but some practice and the right helper can significantly reduce the overall effort.
How about you? Do you really want to work only with hand tools, or is power tools an option? And which HEMNES furniture pieces are you planning to assemble? Some parts are a bit more demanding, especially the larger cabinets.

Regarding the question of whether Ikea HEMNES furniture can be assembled with fewer tools, the following should be noted:
The included tools are already tailored to the assembly process. They can hardly be reduced without compromising the quality of the assembly.
However, the following options are possible:
- Using multifunctional tools with hex key attachments, which reduce the number of tools needed
- Replacing the hammer with a rubber mallet or other gentle aids
- Using a good Phillips screwdriver, which can often be used carefully for hex screws as well
It is important to apply all forces carefully to avoid damaging the screws and the furniture material.
In general, it is advisable to closely examine the structure and instructions before assembly. This usually allows you to create an individual tool setup that fits your personal needs.
