ᐅ How large should a garden terrace be?

We have purchased a newly built semi-detached house.

The terrace is 3m deep (10 feet) by 5m wide (16 feet).

The garden is 10m wide (33 feet) by 20m deep (66 feet).

We want to enlarge the terrace ourselves later but are not yet sure by how much. We wanted to ask what terrace size would be practical—spacious enough with sufficient room but not too large.

The garden faces southwest.

The developer is building a wall as a terrace partition, which will end exactly at the edge of the terrace.

Therefore, it would be best to decide now how deep the terrace should ultimately be.

What should go on the terrace?
How should the furniture be arranged?

Our terrace measures 11 x 4.5 m (36 x 15 ft).

I find 4–4.5 m (13–15 ft) quite good. It allows enough space between the table and the house wall.

...then I might prefer 5 meters (16 feet) wide by 4 meters (13 feet) deep, which in my opinion would be extremely comfortable.
I used to have 3 meters (10 feet) on our terrace in front of the kitchen. I just looked at the pictures again with the table and chairs there, and that was absolutely fine, especially if there's no wall or ditch right behind it. We were four people living there.
But if there is space, it can be 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) or even possibly 4 meters (13 feet) deep. No more than that, though—it should still be in proportion to the house.

The house is 6m (20 feet) wide.

We were thinking about 4m (13 feet) or 5m (16 feet) deep and then 9m (30 feet) wide, so the terrace would extend all the way to the fence across the entire width.

But I have a hard time imagining something like that and I tend to exaggerate sometimes 🙂)

Please upload some pictures and describe what you have in mind for the terrace or what you want to do with it.

Is that even allowed?

It seems quite extreme to me, but as others have mentioned, it depends on the usage. My parents have a terrace that’s 4m (13 feet) by 6m (20 feet), and I always thought that was plenty big enough.
