ᐅ Shoes on the patio – where to put them? Would a cabinet be a good solution?

Hi,
we are currently planning our terrace. Due to some unfortunate events, we haven’t managed to finish it yet, even though we have been living in the house for three years. Over time, I noticed that in summer we almost always leave our shoes next to the patio doors. Since these doors are in the kitchen and living room, I hadn’t originally planned any space for that. But as life goes, I’m afraid that won’t change anymore.

How have you handled this? Do you regularly take the shoes out of the hallway and put them away properly? Or do you have a cupboard in the living room where the shoes are stored? Maybe an outdoor cabinet directly on the terrace?

The best plans are useless if the 1.5-year-old runs off with them... we once had a few on the terrace, now I just go barefoot.

In winter, you definitely need sturdy footwear anyway, and in between, there’s nothing left... six weeks ago there was still 50 cm (20 inches) of snow, now it’s 27 degrees Celsius (81°F) on the coast.

Quick follow-up question to understand the issue. Is it about "going out onto the terrace to work and getting dirty / fetching firewood around the corner," or about normal terrace use, like sitting outside, having breakfast, or sunbathing?

I go out the back into my garden. There, I usually dig in the soil among my roses or peas, play with the cat in the grass, or work on my paths and trellises. I could go out the front, but I can’t leave the door open there to slip back inside quickly. It’s just nicer out the back. But I almost always end up getting dirty.

People really wear those incredibly ugly rubber shoes made by Crocs

I’ll put it loosely, quoting Lagerfeld...

“Anyone wearing Crocs has lost control over their life...”

Where those things are left lying around, there’s really no saving the appearance. SCNR...

But regarding the original poster’s question; I don’t quite understand the problem either. If I want to work in the garden and get dirty, I just go out the front door. That’s also where the garden shed with all the tools is located. It would never occur to me to walk through my living room wearing work clothes.

If I’m just going out to sit on the terrace, I wear only flip-flops, socks, or go barefoot.

Best regards,

Andreas

Several colorful flip-flops (blue, turquoise, black, beige) standing on stone next to a glass front.

What? Crocs are out of style, but flip-flops are in? They are all Crocs... Aldi-style flip-flops don’t exist.

My wife wears these Crocs, which look like bear paws when she has them on. However, I prefer Birkenstock Arizona Birkoflor in dark blue. When I have to go to the countryside, I wear boots, Dunlop, or old boat shoes from Clarks.
