Hello everyone,

I am currently considering replacing the standard handles on the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. I’m particularly interested to know if anyone in this forum has already installed new handles and is satisfied with the result.

It would be helpful to learn which types of handles you used, whether the installation was easier than expected or if there were any unexpected challenges. I’m also interested in whether the new handles are functional for the drawers or doors and if they visually suit the KALLAX.

Since the original handles are rather simple and functional, I am looking for durable alternatives that give the unit a more personal appearance.

So, who has installed new handles for the KALLAX and can share experiences that go beyond just design considerations? Thanks in advance!

That’s exactly the issue: In my opinion, anyone who believes that new handles will turn the KALLAX into a design piece is mistaken. The simple construction makes elaborate and tactile handles almost irrelevant because the basic design remains plain.

Although I have personally changed handles on furniture before, I see little added value in doing so for the KALLAX—handles need to be primarily functional; everything else is just decorative. To me, it’s more a question of whether the effort and cost are justified for something that mainly serves as storage.

Does anyone here know of balanced alternatives that increase its functionality? Or is it just a cosmetic flaw? I’m skeptical but open to counterarguments 🙂

I wouldn’t fully agree with that. Although the KALLAX is designed as a simple shelving unit, handles can be a practical upgrade, especially if you consider features like soft-closing drawers or more ergonomic handling.

I have personally installed handles with better tactile feel and find that the difference in everyday use should not be underestimated. The appearance is more of a side benefit.

However, you definitely need to pay attention to the drill holes, as the originals are not compatible with all types of handles. It would be interesting to know if anyone has a good solution for installation without complicated drilling or subsequent repairs.

One thing is certain: those who choose handle designs carelessly will quickly face issues with stability and usability.

As a supplement, I would like to provide a brief guide and some tips on installing new handles on KALLAX units.

1. Check the drill holes: Original KALLAX furniture has standardized drill holes that do not always fit standard handles. Therefore, before purchasing, verify that the screw length and spacing match.

2. Installation: If the new handles require different drill holes, I recommend measuring the holes precisely and filling the old ones with wood filler or suitable plugs from a hardware store to ensure stability.

3. Material choice: Metal or wooden handles are more durable than plastic ones. The surface finish (powder-coated, painted) also affects ease of maintenance.

4. Appearance: Handles with a matte finish complement the classic KALLAX look better, while glossy ones can sometimes appear out of place.

Summary: Anyone installing new handles should plan and measure carefully to avoid unnecessary rework.

If anyone wants to recommend specific handle models, please feel free to share.

I installed simple, round metal handles in my home.

What’s important: check the screw length and shorten it if necessary. KALLAX material is not very thick, so screws that are too long can cause issues.

Installation was straightforward, and I like the look. Functionally, they are clearly better than the original handles because they provide a better grip.
